Yeah, reserves only work if you expect a relatively large number
of bidders -- regardless of the object being sold.

Reserves require bidding wars to work. If 2 or 3 people make
entirely reasonable bids, there's no way to work the bid over
the reserve.

Personally, I think of two numbers: a low one that if it sells,
I won't hate myself, even if I'm not happy; a high one that I
would be adequately OK with if it sold.

Then I set opening bid to the low number, and buy-it-now to
the higher and let it go.

If you DO get a bidding war, then the price will rise past
buy-it-now, bu tif it's an item that gets only a few bids (far
away ramblers) and your now price is reasonable, a sole bidder
can get the item.
