[Amc-list] Le Wrecks Strong Look.. THAT was good!

Great line about penetrated by a strong look... and
almost true.  THere is hardly a panel on a LeCar that
a determined 10 yr old couldn't dent with their bare
hands.

Most of you probably know that at one time in the USA
we were using Ramblers and Falcons to run our version
of Rallye's.  They were cheap, available and easy to
work on.  Now we have the Chero-Speed series (which is
a BLAST to watch and hear!) because there are a lot of
those around...same criteria!    

The reason the sport at the grassroots level is
dominated by small fwd's is that is what the average
Joe can afford and find parts for in those parts of
the world where this stuff is popular.  Just like the
most popular cars at our dragstrips are Fox Mustangs
and Camaros, they have Renaults, Seat's (say-yacht),
the occasional Lada and other small hatchbacks.  (yes,
I know Imports have a strong following at the drags,
NOPI guys, I am just making a generalization here!)  

The FACTORY sponsored cars are AWD because of the
traction and stability.  THey are about as similar to
the street versions as NASCARs!  Wild suspensions and
hyped up one-lungers are the norm there.  Trust me, if
everyone of those R5 "flippers" could have afforded
AWD, they would have had it.  

LeCar were poular bacause they were CHEAP and easy to
work on (EXCEPT the Turbo R5's) however, their track,
rear suspensions and top heavy tendencies made them a
handful.  The rear suspensions were really horrible
for handling and you can see in several of these
scenes how they they could start to wag when unloaded
even in gentle turning situations...I have driven the
stock LeCars!  When pushed to their limits, they could
suddenly unload and it felt like the would just bounce
out from under you!   

The hot Turbo R5's widened the track and tightened the
suspension to try and alleviate these issues also
allowing for wider tires.  They were so tight and had
so much power that only a really talented driver could
do well with them... never drove one, but I hear quite
a handful, even at 50%. You might be pissing blood for
a couple of days if you made any long trips in one! 
You can see how little give there is in their
suspensions.  They say they were great when you could
create a little slide but almost got you in trouble
when things would stick hard.  

They snuck a couple of other makes in there as well...
looked like a couple of European Escorts, a Fiat and
perhaps a Peugot... will have to check again later!  

If you haven't seen it though enjoy watching the
bystander's near misses, especially where the old man
is crossing the road and looks like he's petting the
LeCar while it runs over his feet... YIKES!
