The senders are also not hard to clean up and repair.

The resistance card you can slide 600 grit paper under the delicate wiper
to clean off, then gently rub the resistance card until the wire windings
are shiny where the wiper runs.

The rest of the thing clean with steel wool and some solvent.

Unless it's mangled they usually revive just fine. YOu should have seen
the rust and crud on the one from my AMerican! It's now working perfectly.

PS: Buy a new filter sock/O-ring kit from an AMC supplier like Galvin's. 
About $10 and worth it.
