Typically the aftermarket ignitions alter the signal to the tach to the point it no longer recognizes it.
You can fry the tach doing this with some aftermarket ignitions. 
  I'd use the ignition manufacturers advise or someone that has actualy done it.
 No sense in smoking a perfectly good tach!
