I kept the front rotors off the 97 Cherokee for the same purpose...
I think the offset on the 97 XJ is too deep as they are front vented rotors, but someday when I get time I'm going to try them out for fit. The ones have are useable, just getting down close to minimum so I pulled them. I can turn them and use them if they work. I'm thinking they will over hang the axle tube and make a bolt on caliper mount impossible. I could use some clamp on stock car mounts though. The nice thing would be having the caliper sit back far enough to make wheel fitment not and issue.
  I might try them on the 9" once I get axles, just to see what they look like...
I missed a pair of stockcar caliper mounts for $10 at Butler this year! The guy in front of me snatched them up before I could get to them!
