Re: [Amc-list] 70 Donohues

Joe,
No scab picking intended here...just years of experience of AMCers giving other AMCers a hard time about one thing or another. Never made any sense to me and resulted in our supporters being perceieved as fairly cantankerous by hobbyist of other brands.

Regarding the "mythical" 360, I just ran into someone this weekend with one of the SR 401 serial numbered engines. It has the SR mark on it, a 1971 401 serial number, a 390 bore and it came out of and will be going back into a 1970 AMX.

Back when these cars were new in the late 60s and early 70s having an early engine replacement was considered a sure sign of the car being a lemon so I am not at all surprised that the previous owner of Joe's Donahue was told by someone when he bought it that the engine had never been replaced. This would be particularly true for a muscle car as most people back then would assume the car had been seriously wailed on in order to have a "blown engine" (as in blown up not as in having a blower on it) which would make all drive train parts suspect.

AMCs were prime suspects for undisclosed engine swaps due to, as most AMC owners know, all the later V-8s looking the same and having identical exterior dimensions so unless someone crawled under the car and checked the numbers on the block the cars were easily passed off as having the original engine installed.

Regards,
Dan Curtis
