That was a short investigation! The Jeep XJ tank sits where the muffler does on the 63-66 Classic. It's also a whopping 13" deep. The Classic tanks is only 6-7" deep in the front, and tapers back to 4" or so at the rear. 

By the way, you'd mentioned something about the original tank interfering with a trailer hitch on your Ambo convert. It might. I made a custom 2" receiver hitch for mine. It's basically a piece of 2"x3" 11 gauge rectangular tubing behind the bumper with a piece of 2" (inside) tubing welded to the bottom and gusseted with some 1/8" plate (drilled for safety chains). With the stock tank I had no problem with a ball mount, but the new custom built tank is almost 1/2" closer to the back and drops down an extra inch. That extra inch in depth meant I had to have the ball mount trimmed roughly a couple inches to clear the tank. I left a 1" gap between the ball mount and tank. The ball mount still extends through the 2" piece, so no worries. Strength wasn't compromised, but I make sure I take the hitch out when not in use. Otherwise a hard tap on the rear end could push it into the tank, though I/m not real worried -- it takes a hard blow to bend 2"x"x11 gauge rectangular tubing!

Another thought for us non restoration guys. What would a Cherokee XJ
tank look like in the Classics and Ambassadors? I believe it is
deeper, but size is probably smaller overall. The fill tubes are in
the right, read that left, side too.
Frank, didn't you look at one for yours? Early 84-86 had carb'd engines too.
