The engine was used in 63-64 full size Jeeps -- the first Wagoneer and J-truck. It was also used in Willys wagons and pickups through 65. The AMC 232 replaced it in the bigger Jeeps in 65 with one exception -- military J-series trucks (M-715 and M-725) used the 230 up through 1969. I've seen one on rare occasion in old salvage yards. One was in a Wagoneer, but most are in old M-715s. The military trucks were geared way low -- 5.87:1 with a T-98 four speed trans. Top speed with the 230 all wound out was 55 mph, but more practically about 45 mph. I've driven one an old farmer in Idaho had. The military phased them out in the late 70s/early 80s, though one could still be seen occasionally on Army posts in the mid 80s.

I'm eternally confused by this motor... so did it appear in US
production vehicles at any time, or just south of us? What'sa chance of
stumbling into one on the real world?
