Mine has 170K - 4wd - 2dr. shifts great - 

there are rebuild kits online - Google AX-15.

It's an AX15 trans. Usually quite sturdy.
Unless it is trashed I would recomend having it fixed.
Used ones will likely all be in the same condition as low mileage ones are not exactly falling out of trees anymore.
You can source rebuilds from many vendors also, eBay and other places will all have them available.
If he's willing to take a chance on a used one they are out there.
