Since you say you've got the timing cover off to look at the timing set,
you'd be well ahead of the game to go ahead and install a NEW timing set
and get rid of that old nylon gear. Buy a timing set for a late 80s Jeep
4.0 and that will get you a true roller timing chain that's a direct
replacement for the original 232 stuff. The longetivity of the Jeep 4.0
engine is mostly attributed to the fact that all 4.0 engines came
equipped with the roller chain from the factory.
