The Chev lifter cover was to access the lifters so they could be changed 
(which they needed now and then due to collapsed internals) I changed out 
quite a few of those, usually because the pushrod wore a hole through the 
rocker and popped loose to one side, causing the lifter to slap the bottom 
of the rod until it's snap ring came off and it spilled it's guts.

finally found my info, from frank swygert about 4 years ago.
the 8
was descended from the older sixes of the '20s, not the series
that
became the ohv 252.

the chevy 194/215/230/250/292 also had side inspection plates;

never understood why.  they never had side valves; never even
