[Amc-list] Re; Temp Sending Unit

Ross

Snip
I've got a '73 Gremlin with a 304 that has a non-functioning temp.
guage.
I have replaced the temp sending unit and cleaned the contacts in the
wire
leading from the unit to the firewall. What else can I do to test or
repair the guage?

The regulated voltage is supplied by the gas gauge it etc etc etc.

Yes, the gas guage works fine. So that tells me that there is a break
in
the wire from the temp sending unit to the guage, correct?
Snip

Not really but maybe. I did not go to the web page in question to read
it, but using a volt meter to measure the voltage available at the
end of the wire by the temp sending unit you should see some form of
an intermittent voltage turning on and off, or maybe depending on the
system a steady volts DC of something on the order of 5-6 volts. It
does depend on the dash gauge voltage regulator and how it works.
If you have a voltage present on the end of the wire you should be able
to ground the wire on the engine block and the heat gauge will rise.
That would indicate that the heat gauge is functioning or not.
If there is no voltage at the end of the wire, then the next question
would be is there voltage back at the gauge? That is the source of
things but that also requires getting at the gauge and making
measurements.
So the problem could be at the gauge, at the dash board and it's
connectors, at the wiring under the dash, at the wiring going through
the fire wall or anywhere in the wiring under the hood.

Wouldn't it be easier if you had a schematic or wiring diagram?
This way you could see where you had to check out things and what was
involved. Purchasing a service manual would sure help you out or----
you could go to;

Follow the directions to enter the web site and then scroll down the
left side where it says technical and look for the wiring diagrams
for a 1970 to 1974 Hornet/Gremlin with a V8 engine and copy them off
or at least look at them.

Good luck at finding and fixing your problem.
