Thanks! That is EXACTLY what I need to do, put a 4.0 head on a '73 
block. do you remember if the head bolt size needed to be changed?

My reply may be very late and not terribly helpful, but for what it's
worth...


I did fill-in the extra water jackets on my 4.0 H.O. head for use 1973
block.  It did not cost much, and it has not caused any problems.  I do
not remeber if it was absolutly neccessary or not.

i don't recall if anyone answered these questions.

4.0 valve gear and head bolts are in the same place as any 199/232/258,
and the bolts are 1/2" like all but the '81-6 258s.

the water port thing is more to do with the block; they made both 4.0
and 258 a little wider on one side in '87.
