It's also quite likely that the trans is a Tremec T-176. The 176 was
commonly used behind sixes and eights between 1976-1982, and is a very
decent medium-duty trans. I wouldn't put it behind anything larger than
a small block, particularly not for use off-road, but on-road it's a
very smooth and capable unit.
The T-18 used in Jeeps were more commonly found in the trucks-
J-10s, 20s, and the thousands, and also in some Wagoneer and Cherokee
models. I believe most of these heavy-duty units had a 4:1 first gear,
though, not the 6.32:1 found in the unit as used in Ford and Scout
vehicles of the era. I purchased one of these for my '82 Jeep Scrambler
when the wimpy T-5 gave out AGAIN (at least the fourth time); mine came
from a 1978 Ford F250 with a dump bed.
I don't know if the T-176 can be functionally discerned from the
T-18 from the outside, except perhaps by the lack of a synchro on first
gear (if it has one, it's also possible it's a T-19, but that was not
offered in the Jeep) or the throw of the shifter. Either way, as you
said, it can be decoded by the VIN.

For those whgo have already responded to the first post, I'll be sending the file out right after Christmas. I can't send the printed edition out to subscribers until then, and I don't think it fair to send out the free issue until paid subscribers at least have theirs in the mail!
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here's the offer: Drop me an e-mail and I'll send you the free first issue of American Motors Cars (AMC) in electronic format. This is a rename and slight face-lift of "AIM" (American Independent Magazine). The name change is to make the focus and subject of the magazine more obvious. AIM was chosen because I'd intendeded to bring some of the other independentd in, but no one was interested in writing for them on a regular basis, so that idea fell through.
To top the deal off, I'm offering $2 off the regular subscription price for new subscribers. That's $20 for a printed (black and white) subscription, $16 for a PDF file e-mailed (full color, 2-3MB file). The license for the PDF file is simple enough: purchasers have authorization to maintain one digital and one printed copy for their personal use only, no copies in digital or printed format are to be distributed in whole or part without written permission from the publisher.
I will be uploading a new sample issue on the website later today. It's a "teaser" of the first issue of AMC -- it has a page or two from each article, but not the whole article. That can be distributed and posted as long as it is kept completely intact. It will have a cover letter and a subscription form embedded in it. Just have to add those later today.

77 Camaro Z28, the reason I mention this is because there was a guy in high
school down in Corpus Christi who seemed to buy a new car each season. He
got one of these and always parked it out front on Texan street. He got his
ass kicked by your's truly in my 70 Javelin 360/AT one afternoon out on
Texan avenue in front of a bunch of onlookers. Not good. A week later, his
Camaro got it's ass kicked again, this time by a blue 71 Roadrunner a buddy
of mine had, a 383/4speed car. Similiar to this, but it had different stripe

Give me a break on the words like clones, recreations and such. It is
altered. While some are tripping themselves over six cylinder Challengers,
Barracudas and the like to make 'hemi clones' this is a neat alternative. My
bookie says this one will fetch over $100K. You got some who like to judge
and critisize others cars that are not built to "their" particular tastes.
All the while their front yard looks like a AMC salvage lot. As Trump would
say to Rosie "Shaddup!"

Non AMC: this is a Corvette that belonged to astronaut Gus Grissom. I used
to work with his oldest son at a club here in Houston in the 1980s, good
kid. Spoke fondly of his dad, who died in a fire in a capsule in the 60s. I
often wondered what happened to this car. It originally started it's life a
blue on blue car. Very nice history behind the vehicle, even with teh
tragedy of Gus. Not sure he ever got to enjoy the car and don't know what
ever happened to his son, as last saw him in about 1986.

A couple of days ago, I got a DVD from Hot Rod Magazine that's part of a
series called Dream - Build - Drive that is supposed to cover
restoration and performance improvements. The DVD I was sent covered
floor pan replacement in a 70 Chevelle convertible. It seemed to be
pretty quality info and they spent a good amount of time on it (about an
hour, there's some other stuff before they dug into the floors that
wasn't all that useful to me). Anyone else seen this?

1970 VIN A1A061P106545 I purchased car from second owner who bought it in
1972. The mileage is original 39,000. It was taken off the road in 1974. It
spent most of its life in a barn. It was bracket raced off and on until 1999
at the Mason-Dixon Dragway in Hagerstown, MD. The Hornet spent its whole
life in the Hagerstown area. In the spring of 2001 it was purchased by me
