We had a couple branches and 1 dead tree fall on the property nowhere near the cabin) 3 major sections of the road were damaged and there was almost 3 feet of mud that someone with a tractor scraped off the road. This section is patched just before the road goes over the railway on a bridge. The Railway is on the top right (level with the guardrail) There was a logjam at the railway's bridge over the river, which caused the river to flow down the railway tracks and wipe out the road. It used to be up level with the railway in this pic. One of my neighbors got stuck last night 1/2 way up the other side with a Dodge 1 ton 4x4 while pulling a trailer (pics REALLY don't show how bad it is. The bouncing took out his driveshaft) Luckily my '73 Jeep J4000 is sure footed and even made it in and out in 2wd while towing another Jeep. The offsets are different (which is why Keliegh's trans bombed out) If you run the AW4, use the AW4 flexplate (if you go to EFI, Renix and HO use different tone rings but that's the only difference) and starter ('87 up Grand Wagoneers use the same starter according to my rebuilder's guide at work. Flexplate for the late model GWs have a different offset as well) If you want to run a 4.0L with HO EFI and a 727, you can carve the crank sensor hole easy enough in the trans bellhousing (I have a 999 case with crank sensor from a 2000 Wrangler 4.0 I was going to build that is going into my for sale pile along with the valvebody. I sold the guts to someone who used some of the internals in an XJ 904) and use the TJ 999 flexplate, which should attach to the converter with the correct offset. I thought there was no valvebody (other than direction controller and manual over ride for the gears) in the AW4? Just electric solenoids controlled by the computer? From: "Swygert, Francis G MSgt 436 CES/CECM" <Francis.Swygert3@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] Trans for 72 232 six (AW4 w/o EFI) Mark, it doesn't take much to get an AW4 working with a stand-alone controller (TC from now on). The stand alone controller was used from 87-95. In 96 the OBDII controller has the trans controller integrated with it. (snip) The only other problem is the flex plate. You need to run an AW4 flexplate and matching 4.0L starter. The TF flexplate MIGHT work if redrilled, but I'm not sure. I know there can be problems using an AW4 flexplate with a TF converter. You have to make sure the converter isn't pushed into the trans to far or you'll burn up the front pump. Keleigh Hardy found that out the hard way, IIRC! The solution is to shorten the "ears" on the hub or thin the threaded mounting lugs on the converter. Or just use the correct flexplate and starter -- neither of which are hard to find in salvage yards now. Well, there's a bigger problem I suppose -- finding a 2WD AW4 in a Jeep. Not hard to do in the south, but in northern parts of the country (including Pacific NW -- anywhere there's a reasonable amount of snow) they are pretty hard to find. But there may be a solution! The AW4 is also known as the A340 in Toyotas, but it's the same trans. The main trans body should interchange on the Jeep bell housing. The only difference I've seen is that some of the Toyotas (specifically the Supra) use an electronic servo in place of the TV cable. From what I saw the servo mounts in the same location as the cable, and should be replaceable with a cable. The valve body is calibrated differently, but valve bodies will interchange. The only drawback here is you'd likely need to buy a Jeep 4x4 trans and a Toyota 2WD trans (trucks and SUVs, Supra and others rear drive cars with the I-6 or V-6) for all the parts. If the servo can indeed simply be replaced with a cable then you just need the Jeep flexplate and bell. I'd use the converter that goes with the trans, especially if the trans and/or converter are used. _________________________________________________________________ View Athlete?s Collections with Live Search http://sportmaps.live.com/index.html?source=hmemailtaglinenov06&FORM=MGAC01 ------------------------------ Message: 6 Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2006 11:54:58 -0800 From: "Jim Blair" <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] Trans for 72 232 six (AW4 w/o EFI) To: mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <BAY114-F33C7C465ABD771CDCCEB42ACE20@xxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed One of the Jeep guys is stuffing an AW4 behind his 360 in a '90 Grand Wagoneer (that's why we have been test fitting everything under the sun)- ----Original Message----- From: Mark Price [mailto:markprice242@xxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, November 21, 2006 7:53 PM To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: Swygert, Francis G MSgt 436 CES/CECM Subject: Re: [AMC-List] Trans for 72 232 six For some reason the AW4 always slips my mind! If I was doing an automatic swap I would indeed use it. They are, as far as I'm concerend, One of the most reliable automatic trans out there. It's not at all unusual to see one pass 200K without a whimper. They have a nice gear spread and work well too. Anyone put one behind a non EFI six yet? Just curious of what it would take to get the trans controller up and working. I know The manual controllers like Franks can be built or bought, but an true automatic function would be more fitting. Nothing like the thrill of driving a project car for the first time, is there?! The MC from a 70-76 Hornet will be your best bet. It will have the correct volume and residual pressure valves for the current drum brakes and be easy to use with discs if you decide to use them later -- just remove the front residual pressure valve and bolt on 79-83 Concord/Spirit/Pacer front discs. You will have to run some new brake lines to split yours up. You don't have a pressure differential switch, so you can just run a "T" for the front brakes and use a connector for the rear brake line. Your brake light switch is in the distribution block, I think, and is a pressure type. If that's the case and you want to retain the pressure switch, use a "T" to connect the rear brake line to the MC and put the switch in the "T". I suggest you rig a normally closed momentary switch from Radio Shack (or a 70 Javelin brake light switch from the auto parts store) on the brake pedal though. All the newer pressure type switches don't stand up to daily use. Will probably last a long tim! e in a weekend car, but I've had them fail within a year on a car driven daily (like back and forth to work daily!). I do suppose you know I mean replace the current junction block with two "T" fittings (or a "T" and a connector), then run new lines from the fittings to the MC... you might have to adjust the pushrod, but that should be about all. I remember bolting one to my old 61 American and my 63 Classic with no problem. ----------------------------------------------- Date: Thursday, November 23, 2006 02:21 AM From: johnny kazek <johnnykazek@xxxxxxxxxxx> After replacing the spun wheel hub and now the brakes, the mighty 60 Rambler Wagon made a 1/2 mile trip around the corner to get some air in the tires! There's also a failsafe mode so the vehicle can be manually shifted with the shifter if one of the solenoids fail. It skips a gear when that happens, depends on which solenoid is out. The solenoids just handle the shifting after it's in drive. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AIM.html (free download available!) ------------------------------ Message: 11 Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2006 21:59:58 -0800 (PST) From: d stohler <das24rules@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-List] happy turkey day to all the amc'ers To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <20061124055958.87781.qmail@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed...
