Maybe I am way behind in the news, but there is a place in CA that rechromes
bumpers and bumper accessories. I ran into them at a car show in Zephyr
Hills, FL last weekend. They do Nash from 1942 and up and METs as well as
most all AQMC thru 1979. Jeeps from 79 to 1990.

I stopped in at a Menards on the south side of Chicago yesterday (the one at the Dan Ryan and Sibley, if you're in the area) and was pleasantly surprized to find that they had a lot of AMC Matchbox type cars in their car-toy aisle. All were '74 Gremlins, available in blue only, and '76 Pacers, only in orange. I bought several of each as they were only $1.99. I suspect other Menards might carry them as well.

The other cars were Pinto and Maverick. Maybe they just sold out of all of the more popular ones; that's okay by me: I like all of the models that they have left!

I have taken to making Christmas tree decorations from cars - just drill a small one in the roof, and you're ready to add a hook and hang. Spark plugs also make a nifty Xmas tree decoration - again, just add a hook.

Can anyone recommend a paint color
brand and/or provide any current codes
for:

a. 1969 "Pompeii" Yellow [P76]
b. 1976 "Sunshine" Yellow [6V]

The "Pompeii" is original for my '69
Rambler wagon, but the "Sunshine",
as I had on my '76 Matador wagon, is
much brighter, and in my opinion,
prettier.

In any case, the indicated code is for
Martin Senour, according to the code I
got from Eddie's site.

I have only used PPG in the past, but
apparently Sherwin Willliams mixes
the Martin Senour now, as a "private
label" option.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Jay

Jay,

The paint code for Sunshine Yellow from Martin Senour
can be found here:

http://www.martinsenour-autopaint.com/formula/car_detail.cfm

You may have to paste the link into your browser.

The same paint code was also used in 1975 and that's
the code on my 75 Pacer. I had some mixed (PPG) at my
local body shop supply place and it is a perfect
match.

I sprayed a 73 Gremlin this color with Ditzler back in 1980.
It was my first overall paint job that I sprayed totally myself.
Nice color, not quite brought enough to be overpowering, but a step up from the faded look of the earlier color.

Jay,
The following paint code information
I believe is correct.

a. 1969 "Pompeii" Yellow [P76]
Ditzler/PPG 2009

b. 1976 "Sunshine" Yellow [6V]
Ditzler 2827 PPG, Dupont 44119

As far as which one is prettier, can't
help you there, I prefer pearl white.

John.

   driver quality only, medium price.
for top quality try Qualchrome, Erie, Pa. They have a lifetime
warrantee and look much better than n.o.s.!!!
a few tips- chrome work is like paint work, the straighter the part is
the better it will turn out- get the best cores that you can find and
   save some money on labor.
Don't buy already rechromed bumpers unless you don't mind someone
   elses bent up cores.
You can't see how a bumper fits till it's on the car. Try the core on
the car before it's been rechromed.
Always remove all the wrapping paper and carefully examine any
   rechromed part!!!!!!!!!
Don't accept any poor quality work no matter how cheap the
price, chrome is the first thing anyone notices on a car good or
   bad.......

   Happy Hunting,
   amxron

I can answer your question on the Bumper Boyz chrome for AMCs as I used
there chrome bumper front and rear on my 1969 Javelin restoration. They
were not cheap. It was about $700 for the front and rear bumpers. The good
thing is they have a good list of AMC bumpers ready to go. They are at all
the major shows and do good work. My only complaint would be it cost me
almost as much to ship them my old cores back to them as I got in credit
for them. I believe it was a little over $100 to UPS the my old cores back
to them. I got about $75 a piece for my old cores I sent them so I only got
back about $50 credit for my old cores credit. But on the other hand I
made sure to send them my rusty and bent old bumpers. I know they will
rechrome and straighten them , but figured they were only giving $50 or so
for my old cores so I gave them the worst I had. I kept my good extra
cores. There is an outfit in Dubuque , Iowa that advertises in old cars
weekly that also suppose to be good, but I found out that the Dubuque
outfit can take as long as six months to get your specific parts back to
you. The bumper boyz had stuff in stock and so I went for quick and good
and people I could talk to at the various big swap meets directly.
And I'll add with out any prejudice intended that the Bumper Boyz who are
largely SoCal Mexicans do seem to really know there chrome. The bumpers
look good and I've had people tell me they look good. I could probably got
cheaper else where , but I was trying to get the car done and so went for I
can get this next week or so as opposed to waiting for some one to do my
old bumpers and give them back to me. There was basically no one in my old
home town of Peoria Illinois who did good car chrome work and like I said
the bumper boyz had enough AMC chrome on the shelf from old cores they
could ship out right away, quickly . I probably paid extra for the speed at
the time.
But I was interest in getting it done asap and I did.

I finally finished shortening the snout of my aougha horn and installed
it in the car. I needed to shorten the snout 2 inches so I will have
enough room to mount my billet aluminum windshield washer tank and
billet radiator over flow tank. I had all the parts sand blasted and
painted the snout which was chrome with SEM self etching primer and then
with Eastwood's silver wheel paint and sprayed their diamond gloss coat
clear over it. It looks like pearl silver. The remaining parts I used
the same primer on and used a Prevall sprayer to paint them the original
body color (orange) and also cleared them with Eastwood clear. All the
parts were baked at 130 degrees in my dehydrator for a week to make the
paint rock hard. Nothing like having body and fender & modeling skills
for this restoration / modification job. The horn looks better than when
it was new when my father put it in his 69 Rebel. With the orange engine
compartment it looks factory. Now I need to make two 1/2 inch aluminum
spacers for the over flow and washer tanks to mount them. I have already
made 2 AMC R/W/B emblems for the tanks filler caps on a round orange
back ground.
