[AMC-List] 1965 American Instrument cluster removal...HELP PLEASE !!!

Hello,
   
  I am in the process of replacing the instrument cluster glass (plastic) on my 1965 American 220.  Does anyone out there know the secret to removing the defroster selector knob and temperature control switch knob.  They have probably never been removed and I do not want to take any chances.
   
  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
