I suspect if you try to eBay this car without installing all the repair
parts you said you have, you won't get much for it on eBay. As "survivors"
go this one is in pretty tough looking shape despite it being a previously
good driver. Unfortunately now from your description, it sounds like it is
due for a motor overhaul, possibly transmission work and from the pictures,
the body is in need of attention on nearly every panel.

On the other hand, my experience with Craig's list is that if you don't
catch someone on the first couple of days, the chances of getting any
attention from the list drops like a rock unless you re-list it every week.

I just got back from the 2006 Speed Week at the
Bonneville Salt Flats last night. It was a good week
and my stepbrothers car bumped the record (which it
currently holds) but could not back it up on the next
day's run, probably due to the wind. He runs a Buick
straight eight bored to 356 cubic inches with custom
cam and roller rockers. It's in a vintage class gas
coupe.

There were no AMC engines running (that I could see)
this year. There were a couple of pre-AMC cars. A 50
Nash was running in the Ford flathead (XF) class. A
step-down Hudson with a small block Chevy was also
there. I spoke to the Hudson owner who indicated that
it did not previously have a Twin-H engine or he would
have kept that powerplant. He assured me the Hudson
parts went to good homes.

The highest speed that I heard about all week was
turned by the Royal Purple (racing oil) streamliner
which had a 390 mph run on the long course with a 410
mph exit speed. That's moving. You can go to the
SCTA website and check to see if there were faster
speeds. I have not yet done that.

All in all a good week. There were all income classes
of owners represented, from blue color guys with
family and friends acting as crew and with cars on
open trailers, to one British knight with a entourage
of approximately twenty employees in matching uniforms
supported by a huge contingent of support vehicles
including one helicopter and an ultralight airplane
taking photos.

I stopped in Nevada on the way home and pulled parts
from a 64 Classic wagon which I had previously
purchased on Ebay. See separate post to follow.

I pulled parts from a 64 Classic wagon this week. The
car was in a vacant lot in a small town in Nevada. I
didn't have rattlesnakes to contend with luckily but
it was prime snake territory and I was warned about
them from a friend in that town.

I'll be posting most of these on Ebay but I thought I
would offer them to list members first.

Gas tank w/o sender $50
Sender (will be tested on only offered if it works)
$25.
Gas tank straps $10 for the pair.

Filler neck $5

Stainless wiper arms plus one unblistered wiper shaft
bezel: $15 for everything.

Tail gate w/o glass (if Tom J. doesn't want it). $50

Tail gate glass: $25

OHV 196 exhaust manifold: $40

OHV 196 distributor (also have several others) $15

I didn't pull a lot of parts because of the heat and
needing to get home. I do have other 63/64 Classic
parts so inquire if you need anything.

I'm a little confused at this one. Ok, BOTH. There was 3499 1965 Ambassador
990
convertibles produced in 1965. Production would have begun however in August
1964 for the 1965 line. The build sheets however were usually predated from
previous year, like for 1968, they would read 67. The VIN on this particular
vehicle H304761 is not anywhere near beginning of production. I'm curious at
to what makes it a actual prototype when almost 3500 of them were made I
guess?

To add to the mystery;

E101946 7 DIGIT VIN last used in 1965 This VIN not used in 1964 or 1966
Ambassador 8 287
White

H304761 7 Digit VIN last used in 1965, according to my reference files,
this VIN could have been used in 1964 and not used in 1966
Ambassador 8 327
Teal

The option list for 1965 shows bucket seats and console in my reference
library.

1966 used a 13 digit VIN with 7th digit being model/engine. Although I
understand that this is not cast in concrete either as early 1966 VINs
might be 7 Digit. If only to add confusion to things.

>From where I sit, the VIN number by itself does not give enough data to
support or disclaim either hypothesis.
I have found in doing AMC/Rambler research that the truth is stranger
then fiction.
How about a base model AMX?

Rich,

SBC rocker studs will work. I have ARP for your 390

Personally, I like the 1978 appraisal that was notarized in 1980. I also
find it hard to believe that it was appraised at about $8,900 in 1980 (does
seem reasonable to a little low for a current appraisal). Also, all of the
big convertibles were 5 passenger so why make a big deal of that? Also, why
would AMC build a prototype for a 1966 model when 1966 was pretty much the
same as 1965 with different tail lights and other trim differences? There
are a lot of inconsistencies between the eBay listing and what's on the
website for this car. It looks like a nice car but this just smells wrong
(anyone besides me think all of the handwriting samples look too much alike?).

I checked the serial number. It appears to be a mid 1964 number
(starting number H255001 for 64). Since serial numbers were assigned as
orders came in this is not unusual for an early production car, and AMC
often pulled cars off the line for specials -- that's why the "Cowboy"
pickup prototype has an SC/360 VIN. I don't think it unusual that the
car has a 64 serial number but construction was in late 63 -- July and
August were the typical change-over months from one model year to the
next (all or part of both months, not 60 days though!). The oddity here
is the extended wheelbase. 63 and 64 Ambassadors shared the Classic
wheelbase, they weren't longer until 65. It's quite possible that the
car wasn't titled for a year after construction considering it's a
prototype. I believe it to be authentic, unless someone changed the
serial number plate. It does require a close inspection -- the serial
number plate should be welded under the hood on the right spring tower.
I would be curious to see the data plate and what model number it has.
Could be 65xx, 63xx, or 64xx, or even blank! I think I'll ask for photos
of these two places.
