If you get it, make darn sure you get the parking brake cables and ALL hardware. Some of that stuff is not available any more through Ford and is impossible to find. If you can buy new calipers and rotors for it, that's all OK.

It will be a bulletproof rear end. Of course, I like them just fine in the Versailles. I happen to also be a fan of the Granada/Monarch/Versailles cars....

Wait, did I just say that in public?  ;-)

OK, so traveling in the middle of nowhere in the
Ozarks, I run across a complete Lincoln Versailles
(fancy Ford Granada)!  THese all came with Ford 9 Inch
rears with Disc Brakes.  

Over the years, I have used plenty of 9 inches in
small AMC's and have always heard of the Lincoln rear
option.  The Company I work with has some reman's
calipers available (Cardone Industries or "A1 Cardone"
as they are commonly known).  

Is there any downside to this Versailles setup, other
than the weight?  I am leaving my 79 AMX 258/4 spd
pretty stock, but I have another 79 with a 70 model
360 (with Factory R4B!) and Mustang T5 that is in the
works and I think this Versailles rear would be a good
match.  Opinions from those of you who have tried it
before?

I am all but certain my 73 hornet parts car had one, with a
York type compressor. Up in the hose near the receiver/dryer.
But you're right more often than me, maybe I hallucinated it.

I stand corrected. I found an 83 wiring diagram and there is a low
pressure switch. 
Also on my 1980 there is one too according to the wiring diagram, but
even with all of the work I have done on it, I never saw one. Go figure!
My 1974 documentation does not show one and I surely don't remember one
on my 1977 but then again maybe I never had to look for one. 
Anyhow I can send the 1983 wiring diagram to some one if they want it.

i agree with tom and john - that's a good deal and -much- closer to a
straight bolt on than the mustang kit would ever be, only a little
tinkering to make things fit.

all amc disks are small enough to clear 14" wheels - iirc 10.8" or

Woo hoo, fee-bay has ten cent listings today and tomorrow so if you have 
anything you wish to unload at a big discount price, go do it now at 
www.ebay.com Some stuff that normally would cost $5 to list is only 10 cents 
so good bargain if you do that sort of stuff.

yes, disk swaps are as easy as the smaller cars.  all amc spindles
bolt on the same way since the '50s.

AFAIK the originals were of a size called '24F'. 24 for the basic battery and
the 'F' to indicate the Ford position of the posts.

I missed this little ummm detail. You want the disk brake
spindles also.  Your drum spindles MIGHT work -- the only
difference 'tween 'em is overall height, which determines
caliper::rotor position and most importantly, whether the dust
shield and other junk klunks into the steerin knuckle.

If it clears, it's fine.

There is a "tall" spindle and a "short" spindle. As far as I
know, most disc setups use tall spindles.

I became minorly obsessed with this issue once upon a time.

The battery you want is a Clear Power.  Unfortunately
they are not made anymore.

This place here has a very close reproduction for what
you need.  It is not 100% correct but is a lot better
that what you can get anywhere else.  They are not
cheap but if you are looking for an authentic look
they are the answer.  They have reproduction batteries
for all 1962-1974 AMCs and the 1974 batteries can be
used up to 1978 with no problem except a minor
appearance difference from OEM.  Hope this helps.

i don't actually know; my expertise stops at the early '60s.  i
wouldn't be a bit surprised if they fit though.

Antique Auto Battery in Ohio makes reproduction AMC batterys, as close to 
period correct as you can get. The make group 24 batterys for both A-Mark and 
AM script logo periods. They also can special order a group 22 battery which 
is for earlier smaller, AMC for early 60's AMCs. They are not CHEAP, at about 
$150 with shipping plus it's shipped dry and you have to go out and buy 
battery fulid for it on top of the $150 plus bucks. I'm on my second one , 
they last about as long as the 3 year warrenty. I'll let some else look up the 
web site if you are really interested. LRDaum

Ever seen one of these? It is a full collection of stuff you would get when 
you bought your new 1972 AMC vehicle:

Eh, I must be getting old,t hat 'ten cent listing' fee-bay has is only if 
you have a ebay store and move your junk to regular auctions. So everyone 
else who don't have a store gets the usual old hoo hah! It looks great on 
the front page of their website with big TEN CENT LISTING that I didn't even 
have to put my reading glasses on. Damned dollar store reading glasses. But 
you read the little print it is for those who have a fee-bait store only. 
What a rip, at least put it in big letters type so us older fogeys with 
eyesite going to heck can see it! Sorry for false alarm, everyone back 
behind the wheel.

makes no difference.  you still have to swap the spindles and they all
bolt on the same way.

put another way: all cars use the same knuckles whether they have
drums or disks.  the difference is the stuff hung off the knuckle.  in
addition, all '70-up cars - both big and small - use the same front
suspension 'knee' assembly [pacer excepted].
