Mopar makes a specific silicone compound for sealing transmission pans. They use it on new models instead of a gasket. Surfaces must be really clean, but it works well. Any Chrysler dealer should have it. I used it on my AW-4 -- I'm pretty sure that when I went for a gasket to a Jeep dealer that's what they gave me, but can't be positive now. The V-6 in the early American sounds intriguing. It has to be a narrow (60*) 2.8-3.4L model. The only problem with them is the stock accessories are to wide, but there are narrow "hot rod" brackets available. Did you get an underhood pic? I'd sure like to see how the accessories were mounted. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AIM.html (free download available!) ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2006 09:06:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Jesse <j2sax@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-List] Cruise near Springfield, MO Pics To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <20060813160625.65868.qmail@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Well, it was fairly small due to the fact that the Branson Nights Midnight cruise was the same night, but it was fun and a 68 AMX parked right next to my 79! That was my proudest one, about the size of a turkey platter. I got it for a longest ride contest--22 seconds. It was a pretty big show, I think it was at the Calgary Stampede, but I might be wrong about the exact venue. Would have been about 1981 or so. Lots of mornings I can STILL feel that ride. Might be a couple buckles still woven into the wire back on the old place. On your reply to the "What To Do?" question, I am absolutely thrilled to hear about the mileage racked up by your trucks. My Gremlin puts on a usual minimum of 64 miles a day, most days more than that. Keep on Ramblin', and I hope your tornady days didn't end like mine. I quit after my cousins dared me onto a dairy cow on their farm, which promptly ran me down a feed fence, then stomped me but good. AMC apathy seems pretty tame after that. m. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! The NAPA gasket seemed pretty good, about 1/8" thick, rubber. I thought I had the pan flat enough. I'm hoping the kludgey Right Stuff (some elastomer stuff; never used it but one rebuilder I knew swore by it) along the external edge after degreasing will hold a year or six months. I can live with a minor seep I guess. I was gonna have it rebuilt this year, but didn't get to it. It shifts fine, but is slow to go into gear. (about 3/4 second; used to be a lot less.) No slipping, noises, funny shifts, etc. It's not a job I'm prepared to do myself at this time. I am seriously considering going back to B&E Transmissions in San Francisco (400 mi north), they (used to be, at least) brain surgeon quality (hence my 18 yrs on this one rebuild). I'll pre-pay for parts and ship up my spare torque converter for rebuild, drive up, visit friends a few days and drive back. The guy in Westminster seems OK, but he tuned up this trans a year or so ago and left the pan badly leaky, and used a really cheap gasket. My old M35 I do not screw with -- I want it treated like aircraft and I'm willing to pay for that. (I'm cheap in other areas though :-) I am trying to avoid even pulling/installing the M35 at home; all I have is a driveway and it REALLY SUCKS doing transmissions on your back. I did two in the yast year. I'll end up paying more 'cause torque-tube cars become immovable with the trans out, but at this point... ------------------------------ Message: 7 Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2006 09:46:09 -0700 (PDT) From: Jesse <j2sax@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-List] 304 Flywheels- 3 and 4 hole interchangeable? I would really like to use it since it was just turned. Are the flywheels the same for the 3 and 4 hole balanced 304's? Thanks, Jesse __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <20060813165136.64454.qmail@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 OK, in the past I have taken the gear off of the 258 dist, put it on an HEI from a 250 and run it, though I have never done it on a vehicle that I have had very long. All of the websites I see say you have to use the gear from an AMC 360? Any opinions? If I put a new 360 gear on my HEI and drop it in, is there any chance that it will not mesh properly and get destroyed as has happened when people have installed HEI's with non-matched gears in AMC V8's (new dist gear w/old cam drive gear)? My 79 AMX runs great for a stocker, however, I would like to put on an HEI with M-craft 2100... maybe a header. It sounded and ran great and I never had problem with leakage, however, it hung pretty low and was a mega pain to get in and out. With the advent of the 4.0 and it's factory header I know a lot of improvements have been made, albeit for various Jeep bodystyles. Has any of you found a good 258/4.0 header design that doesn't take half-pulling the engine to install? A bud had a 99 in his garage and it was a 2-3 split design. I LIKED the looks of that, but wasn't sure if it would work on my car body. A shorty design would work best, but I would rather hear from someone who has had experience witha particular brand. I don't need one right away, but I've been asking around just to see how expensive they are, and how hard they are to find. A good used crank seems to run about $250, but are really hard to find. I found several people in the same boat I am. They had a good 401 block, but need a crank. If you have these made any idea what the selling price would be? It was cracked at the outlet, so I cut it off and ditched the donut and angle. I thne made up a long tapered section to join the front and rear tubes. This ends in a 2.5" diameter pipe runs down and just to the rear of the bellhousing. Then I welded on a collector flange. It ended up being a Tri-Y type short tube header with a long 2.5" collector area. Horsepower? Torque?? I'm not sure. I am sure that it is a very compact design. Very easy to install and remove. It is tucked up tight to the floor in a way few aftermarket exhaust are. It would also be very easy for most anyone with a MIG and basic fabricating skills to duplicate. I took pics of it when it was done, but my computer died. I need ot go thru my discs and see if I can find a copy as I've seen this question come up time and tiem again. Our speculation on the 91-95 exhaust is 9-10 horsepower over the Renix typ manifold, possibly more. Certainly not less. Even in stock form the 91-95 Exhaust Manifold will fit the Spirit chassis. -- Mark Price markprice242ATadelphia.net Morgantown, WV ---- Jesse <j2sax@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: > Years ago I had a CLifford header and intake with a > Holley 390 on a Spirit 258.
