John, it's American, Gremlin, Hornet, Concord and Spirit that
interchange. The exception is 196 powered cars (only 64-65, and no V-8s 
those years). 196 crossmembers have no engine mount perches, the rubber 
mount bolts directly to the crossmember. Javelin crossmembers
interchange with Rebel/Matador (but not Ambassador -- the mounts are
set back further due to the longer wheelbase). 

The V-8 mounts want to bolt up along the rear edge of the six perches,
IIRC. I've welded a plate on top of the six perches and drilled for V-8 
mounts. That was a while back -- I forget if I cut the top flat area of 
the six perches off or not -- I don't think so. The height is about the 
same.

Note that the small cars (American, Gremlin, Hornet, Concord and
Spirit) require engine mount plates that sit in closer to the engine by 
about 1/2" than the other cars. I've seen the big car mounts cut and
welded, but Galvin's (www.ramblerparts.com) and liely some of the other 
vendors have reproduced plates. Galvin's also has repro'd crossmembers. 
He had the V-8 preches made and cuts the six cylinder perches off,
grinds, and welds as you suggested. They are patterned after the
originals and you really can't tell they've been modified.
