List,
I have a 1965 Rambler American 440 Convertible. The rear quarters are badly rusted around the wheel wells. Is there anyone making replacement sheet metal? Any other suggestions on getting the right stuff to initiate repairs? There is a unique, bumped out feature that starts at the wheel well and runs to the back bumper that looks tough to re-create by hand so a repair panel would be a big help.
Suggestions please!
Marlene Rz.

Perhaps the gap wasn't as large on some of mine, but I did once tape a paper
clip onto the rotor to close the gap. Didn't make any difference that time.

You'll either have to find NOS or good used ones. You may also want to take
a look at eBay, I think there's a pair on there now but I may be wrong
about that. For good used sheet metal, I've had very good luck with South
Texas AMC (http://southtexasamc.tripod.com). If you're planning on hitting
the AMO Nationals in Dayton, OH (July 28 and 29), you may find something there.

Also, the wheel wells on your car probably have rust issues as well. If
you're lucky, it's just around the lip but there are lots of places that
got no paint from the factory so the damage is probably a lot worse than
you think it is.

Howard, I'm in agreement with Andrew, it that helps! The black smoke
and sooty plugs are a classic indicator of running rich (assuming they
are dry, and the soot in the tailpipe is dry -- if they are "greasy"
black that's burning oil). The loss of power gradually is a classic
sign of a stopped up catalytic converter. As pressure inside the
tailpipe increases, the engine has to work harder just to try to push
the exhaust out, so power decreases and you have to apply more and more
throttle. Yours obviously isn't plugged all the way, but I'd remove or
replace it. If you can unbolt it for now the thing would be loud, but
you can tell right away if you have to increase throttle or not to get
it to idle right. You also need to replace the oxygen sensor. That
tells the carb how to adjust the idle mixture. I wouldn't do that until
rebuilding the carb, or getting a factory rebuilt replacement. The
later is more expensive, but also the best move. There is at least one
stepper motor in that carb that might need replacing.

With the cost of the carb, you might be better off getting the EFI
system from a 89-93 S-10 or Camaro 2.8L from a salvage yard, or the
entire engine. The wiring isn't that difficult, and you'd end up with a
lot better power and economy. You can't put a 4.0L in that year without
a lot of firewall work (87+ has about a 2" recess in the firewall for
the 4.0L). If you find a nice 2.5L four it will have more power than
your well worn 2.8L V-6 and will bolt right up to the trans. Of course
you would need the flywheel (and torque converter if auto) and engine
mounts for the four. AMC bought the 2.8L V-6 to have a six cylinder
option, but the carbed version only has a little more power than the
AMC 2.5L four. Not enough to be worth the additional os when they were
new in my opinion, something a lot of people here share -- and not just
because it's a GM engine in an AMC -- it's a crappy GM engine even when
in a GM!!

Kent, check the club store at www.amcrc.com. I think they have a repro
already. If not the AMC vendors do.

Check with Peter Stathes, www.amcrambler.com. He can make the strips
for the door windows in the fuzzy stuff or rubber. I had him make
rubber style for my 63 Classic. I know it's not original, but works
better, and my car's just "slightly" modified anyway. I also had him
make a wider squeege type for the wagon tailgate window. The original
left a bit of a gap that lets way to much trash in the gate, causing it
to rust out in the bottom. The door profie on the 75 Mat sedan and
wagon is the same as 67-70 Rebels, so the weatherstrip and window
sweeps should be the same.

Also note that 64 and 65 have the same profile, so either year will
work. 67-69 are different, unfortunately. I agree, the crease would be
difficult to hand form, but it is possible. May have to do it in more
than one section and weld in.

Subject: [AMC-List] Getting an '87 Eagle Wagon
To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Message-ID: <v04011705c0e4b349db2f@[192.168.0.4]>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

My wife and I plan to pick up an '87 Eagle Wagon that we have been paying for.

Two things will need to be worked on before we drive it very far. I will
need to fix some holes in the exhaust system. That seems fairly easy to me:
Coffee cans, tin snips, exhaust compound and baling wire. If my take on the
matter is incorrect, please set me straight. I also expect for there to be
ample room to crawl under the car to do the repair work. When we get the
car home, we will get a proper exhaust system put on it.

Second item to fix. The rear brakes need to be adjusted. If they are like
most drum brakes, there is a star wheel that can be advanced or retracted
to set the clearance. That is done while rotating the wheel by hand until
just a little friction is felt. Again, let me know if that is incorrect. It
has been about twenty years since I did work on brakes. But then again, the
car is about that old too.

The other thing that needs work is the carb. That, I am told is a touchy
business. So I will just keep it running and not slow down much.

What kind of mileage should I expect from a wagon in reasonable mechanical
condition (cylinder pressure is 135 lbs. plus or minus 10%) on a 4.2 liter
6.

Thanks for the input.

I hope to start restoring it after I get it home.
