I just pulled the 500-mile oil change on Molly's cam
job. The oil was absolutely gorgeous, barely
beginning to change color. No fuel smell, sparklies,
debris, sludge or anything else. To add to the
recent controversy, I used the cheapest oil in town
(Coastal from AutoZone is like 1.68). There was about
7 ounces of assembly lubricant in there also. The oil
filter this time is an AC PF-24(isn't this the
original spec?). That is the same filter used upon R
& R of the mechanicals. I go back and forth between
the AC and NAPA's equivalent, depending on where I am
in town at the time.
The bad news is that I detected a light but definite
knocking, now that everything is nice and quiet. I
have traced it down to the balancer, however. At
least it's not in the internals. I haven't been able
to chase one down in the normal parts channels yet.
This is the obsolete pre-75 version, that has the
thinner wall at the back. Anybody know of a source
here in Phoenix? I do have pulleys and fan spacers
etc. if I have to go with the newer style. But the
problem is the Motorola alternator mount, which is
unable to be moved out and would probably require a
conversion to Delco. Got any good balancers up there
in Glendale, John? I also run delivery to be able to
spot cars around town. Keep me in mind. I have
spotted two Spirits recently around this part of town.
Oh yeah. That Gremlin back when in the flood
actually DID swim, disturbingly, for about
tendy-eleven seconds, straight sideways towards the
6-foot dropoff on that side of the crossing.

I have a rebuilt early (I think '73) 232 that I am sitting on as a
possible spare for my 76 if needed. It has a Harmonic Balancer on it
along with brackets etc. I have not compared 76 vs '73 configuration as
it has not become important yet to do so but if they are truly different
than I may have what you want. I am under the impression that the one
on the engine stand and the one in the car are configured the same so
brackets etc. along with accessories will interchange.
The engine has less than 10,000 miles on a rebuild.
The other suggestion would be to get a hold of Bob Green. He has
ownership in a restoration body shop and has been known to convert I-6
early AMC's to go fast V8's and may have a parts stash or know where one
is.
Don't forget that there are rebuilders out there.

Well, thanks to John Elle and Alan Cardain (norCal
AMCs) I have finally hooked up all the little vacuum
hoses and other supporting systems on my 77 Gremlin X.
I fired it off this afternoon and it does run.

I couldn't run it long on the small temporary gas tank
because it took quite a bit of fuel with the return
fuel going to the fuel tank on the car. But it does
run.

Interestingly this car has the BID prest-no-lite
ignition system and the ignition wires to the
distributor were never soldered on this car IAW the
service bulletin. I left it as it is, because the
plug is sure convenient. If I ever get a "no fire"
situation, I'll know to check that connection.

The engine came from a 76 Hornet I parted out. The
two barrel manifold and BBD carb are from the Gremlin
motor which was seized with copious amounts of water
in the oil. I had the 904 tranny completely rebuilt
in a local shop recommended to me. I told them just
replace what's necessary and from the looks of the
invoice, they replaced most of the hard parts as well
as all of the clutches etc. $1000 and I took the
tranny to them. I put new KYB shocks on the front
last week and have KYBs for the rear and new brake
hoses yet to install. I have to finish patching the
grille and refinish it and the headlight doors.

I ordered a rebuilt BBD carb from National Carburetor
today, because the car had been sitting for years and
I had heard plenty of horror stories about the BBDs so
I wanted a warranty.

Next I have to drop the gas tank and clean it, then
begin work on the weatherstripping, and beltline
moldings. Then try to color sand and buff the factory
paint and perhaps order new X stripe decals if I can
bring the paint back enough to deserve new stripes.

To same some money I will try reusing carpet from a
Hornet AMX I am intending to part out, as well as the
door panels. The seats are being recovered now at a
local upholstery shop, with original material (so-70s
orange plaid) I got from SMS in Oregon.

Let's see, where was I in 1977. I had just moved my
family to Golden, CO and was working at a consulting
firm. The AMC dealer nearest me was Bob Bundy AMC
Jeep on Colfax Avenue. At about that time I bought a
68 Rambler American to drive to work and let my wife
keep the Volvo during the day. My kids were seven,
two, and one years of age. Life was good.

Far out, dude.

Joe, I don't know if that is the same problems that my '75 Gremlin had
before we spliced the wire but if it is, when this wire decided to get flaky
it would also do it on the fly, there were many times before I found out
what the problem was that I would be driving down the highway and boom, no
power whatsoever, the car just shut down.

So you might want to re-think the only "no-fire" situation.

Of course your mileage may vary.

Regards,
Kim Bueler - '75 Gremlin X 360 V8

Had a customer come in today looking for a fuel pump for his 327 boat
engine. Hooked him up with a non-glass bowl version for a '66 Jeep 327 (it
will need minor reclocking of the lines) Couldn't believe how much of a
hassle it was to find the part (punk ass kid working at my store tossed all
the old books when the new ones came in because "they were like outdated and
stuff". This from a kid driving a'71 Buick Riv!)

But Dave, just remember to check with vendors next time! could probably
have got those lenses for half that price through one of the AMC
vendors. No point ipaying inflated prices for repro lenses.

Just spray some WD-40 or silicone on them. That will hold off the rust
until you drive it again. Should burn right off the first couple times
the brakes are used. Just be careful those first couple times -- should
be like having wet brakes.

IIRC the brackets and mounts changed around 1974. PS pump was moved,
brackets bolted to the intake. If it's a pretty basic car you probably
won't notice much difference. Some bolts were made bigger in hte timing
cover to accomodate the bracket changes.
