A: A few years back I found a company that made billet cranks to order and I
almost put out the $3500 to get one for my stroker 6, but then I lost my job
and money got tight. (sold the old money pit and now have a cheaper one to
play with!)

Jim,

You are right, you still have a cast crank. That is a
much, much larger investment than the rods in which so
far, there has not been enough support to move forward
with a forged crank. I have looked into making a
forged crank and rod stroker set up that would work on
most of our engines to increase the cubic inch. I
would have to be a complete rotating assembly with
pistons balance to drop right in. If I had at least a
dozen guys right off the bat who would pony up some
money, I would seriously consider moving forward.

Even with a cast crank in the smaller engines, the
cast rods are the weaker link. In most applications,
the crank will hold up much longer and at higher rpms
than the rods will. Baby steps. Work on the weaker
parts and the stuff that will sell and then hopefully
tackle the larger more expensive parts later.

Thanks,

Well, after about a year, they are finally done. We
now have forged I-beam rods for the smaller engines
along with new forgings for the 390 and 401. These
are 4340 forging in the 5.875 length. The small end
is bushed for .930 floating pins (I have full floating
Ross pistons to with these) and come with 8740 ARP cap
screw bolts. These are not some other make rods that
are altered to fit an AMC. These were made
specifically for the 290-360 engines.

These are able to handle up to 800hp but more
importantly, they are a great upgrade from our stock
cast rods in the smaller engines.

With all the great parts like these, hopefully we will
have more guys looking to build up the smaller engines
verses tossing them out for a 390 or 401.

Call or e-mail me for more details.

Thanks,

Nick Alfano
