The grill is still not back in the car due to the front bumper having to
be removed to install the last mounting bolt in the bracket on the oil
cooler and the electric fan. My friends shop is real busy and he can not
do it right now and I am not physically able any more to remove the
bumper myself. The thermocoupler to automatically operate the fan was
not in the installation kit I bought. It is supposedly on it's way. Will
also be adding a 35 amp switch to the fan to allow it to work on the
thermocoupler or manually on & off. The switch came 2 day's after I
ordered it. I can park the car in front of my friends shop in the shade
to re-do the double factory pin stripe but it was to damn hot last week
and is now raining with a vengeance for probably the next week so that
is out. I cut the letters spelling American Motors out of the dark smoke
window tint for the windshield and made the jig to make a straight
reference line across the windshield to install them but then again the
weather will put the kibosh on that too. I guess I will have to dig out
the AMX fender flairs and pick the best ones and start stripping them so
I can paint them. Damn weather.

No, it's not Joe's Bar and Grill.

I am fixing up a 77 Gremlin X which has been sitting
for many years. My goal is to drive it to Bonneville,
UT this August to help my brother crew his land speed
car.

I decided I would have to have a goal or this car
would never get finished. The 258 engine sat idle for
many years with water in the oil (before I owned it),
so I am using the 258 out of a 76 Hornet I parted out.

The ABS plastic grille is broken and is missing one
horizontal bar about 2 1/2 inches long and I am
looking for a junk 77 or 78 Gremlin grille. I have
had good luck with solvent welding the cracks in the
grille and am looking for a junk grille the make the
final repair easier. The cement I am using is a
Weld-On brand made specifically for ABS plastic. It
is thin, like the cement used to fasten PVC plastic
pipe. The repairs must have adequate clamping
pressure applied for a few hours after the repair in
order to get a good bond. But once bonded, the
repairs are very strong.

I work around scrap electronics and have ABS plastic
from computer housings here at home but an actual
grille bar would make an easier and cleaner repair.

Anyone know of a 77 or 78 Gremlin being parted out?

Regards,
Joe Fulton

Just anote on installing those electric-fan thermostats -- the
instructions usually call for inserting the bulb/probe into the water by
slipping it through the hose connection with a foam pad etc.

Don't -- it's a waste of time and is far more trouble than it's worth.
Just lay the bulb along the side or top seam of the top radiator tank
and put a thin film of silicone rubber on it to hold it in place. Done!
(I taped it down til it cured.)

The thermal coupling between the water, top tank, and thermo bulb is
just about perfect. We're not taking the temperature of an infant!
There's kilowatts of waste heat in there, I could measure not even
1-degree difference between any of the coolin system components up
there. Intefering with the top radiator hose is just asking for leaks
(and mess).

Tom the cooling fans thermostat is supposed to be anchored to the cars
thermostat housing or the top radiator tank. Not in direct contact with
any coolant.

Not sure what year, but probably @'75 as it's a "Green Machine" wagon. It's
at Automax in Kenmore, WA (near Bothell) 425-485-8005 18050 68th Ave NE
Kenmore, WA

Looks like they just pulled the motor for a Jeep swap.
