Tooretarded is more likely to cause backfire under those conditions. Also
vacuum leak, weak spark, too lean, cam walk are also in the running. Then
there is sticking valves ( a bit of Marvel Mystery oil in the tank helps
that!) and vacuum advance with a hole in it. If you're running points, the
dist internal ground could be seperating, points getting too much
resistance, and a whole lot of other things. (I could tell what it was if I
could hear/see it in person)

No suggestions on the backfire? I think I'm wrong on it being
through
the carb, it just "sounds like it" while driving. I'll pull the
air
filter (annoyin Weber clips) this weekend to make sure it's not
in the
carb. Could be I suppose.

If it were through-carb backfire, on WOT/2000rpm, that would
only be too
much advance, right? So it would be firing before the intake
fully
closes?

Through more test driving I realized it backfires a lot of the
time,
always wide open throttle under relatively low-speed, high-load
conditions.

I'll re-check timing this weekend, but I know the total was 40
or so,
and that mech and vacc advances were at least working.

Came across a well used 59 Classic. The body is
straight save for one broken wing window. All chrome
is intact and remaining glass too. The windshield has
wiper marks, though. The interior is shot. 3-spd OD.
White with blue interior. A pissed off logger got
drunk and shot up the doors, floors are solid.
Headliner nice. Anyone need parts email me off list or
phone 503-589-9845 Pacific times, I'm in Oregon....Russ

You have to seperate the intake/exhaust and replace the gasket between them
to run the full intake/exhaust set and have it seal properly.

I got the Napa intake/exhaust gasket manifold gasket
set for my 6 cylinder Gremlin X. The gasket set has
an intake gasket which naturally covers only the
intake manifold mating surface (to the cylinder head).
It also includes a complete one-piece intake/exhaust
manifold gasket. I know many folks don't use anything
but the intake manifold gasket (like the factory), but
I want to use the complete gasket. However, my
question is, can you use the intake manifold gasket
along with the complete one-piece gasket.

Also on the one piece gasket, it is not marked as to
which side goes toward the cylinder head.

BTW this appears to be a Victor gasket set relabeled
as a Napa part. Any help appreciated before tomorrow
evening.

Thanks Tom, Glen, Jim for the info. I knew about the
gasket between the manifolds, but Tom's response
provided what I needed about using the one piece
gasket and the separate intake manifold gasket.

I plan to tackle the assembly after work today and
move forward. I still need to clean up the engine bay
and respray it with Sun Orange. Interestingly that
color was still in the PPG catalog but the code for
AMC engine blue was not in the catalog.

I have new KYB shocks front and rear to install and
new brake hoses in front too.

Of course, I forgot that little detail.

Thanks for the tips. I'll start diagnosing this weekend (sigh, I have
other things to do).

I've got a Duraspark II, I'll check distro and timing and eliminate all
that. Engine should be like-new (20K mi), so sticky valves seems
unlikely, it's lived on synth oil changed religiously.

I have it pretty lean, so that's a candidate; I'll re-check the squirter
for stroke and leaks (I had a bad squirt pump diaphragm last year). It
does seem to happen only when the secondary is open, so I can rich that
up a jet size or two or three (it never cruises with secondary open;
it's really easy to feel in the pedal).

I hope it's ignition or sec main jet cuz it's easy to fix and I'm lazy.

Thanks again!

Got snorkle?

Maybe some of you Mopar fans here can let me know specifically what this
goes to, I have had it for quite awhile, neat item but no use for it, glad I
didn't butcher it up in the late 80s, as I'm rather handy with hacksaw after
some Jagermeister.

These new Chrysler wheels are built along the
AMC 'TRU-CENTRIC' Eagle wheel lines:

mounting surface shifted more to the outside
keeping 'outer-hang' to a minimum.

Will these fit the AMC Eagle bolt pattern -
if not - is there a disc swap or mod available not
utilizing spacers ?
