[AMC-List] Known issues on AMC V8s

Todd,

There are a couple things to keep in mind when
building an AMC V8 and some are dependent on the year.

1. For any bridge over style rocker head as well as
anything still running umbrella style valve seals,
.500 lift is about the max you can get out of either
of these without having an issue. If you plan on
putting a cam in that is about or is over .500 lift,
use a stud mounted or shaft style rocker set up and
have PC seals installed instead of the umbrella seals.

2. Make sure either your front cam bearing or the
front cam journal has the oil groove around the entire
circumference and that it lines up with the oil
passage in the block.

3. For any engine that is going to see 6000+ rpms on
a regular basis or one that will be running at higher
rpms for an extended period of time, install the
internal oil line under the intake. It is also a good
idea to install a larger oil pan in this situation.

4. Always sonic test an engine you are going to bore
more than .030 over. Sonic testing will tell you the
thickness of the cylinder walls at top middle and
bottom so you will know if you are going to have a
cooling problem. Some engines had a core shift which
would cause them to be .250 in one spot and .125 in
another. .125 is the rule of thumb for when a sleeve
is needed.

There are others like when trying to put later style
heads on a 68-69 engine or switching from a Borg
Warner style trans to a Torque Flight. These are just
a few things to know and they are basic rule of thumb
issues for AMC V8s. Every engine is different but if
you apply the basics you should be fine.

I remember someone listing out three or four known
issues when
rebuilding an
AMC V8, but I couldn't find the old email. In
particular I remember
the
discussion being that rebuilding an AMC motor wasn't
any worse than
another
make as long as you knew the quirks. Can anybody list
them out for me?

Thanks,

Todd
