Yesterday I got the tranny oil cooler hooked up in conjunction with the
one in the radiator. The cooling fan was another thing. The installation
kit did not have the sensor in it to operate the fan automatically so
for now it is wired up to run when the ignition is on till I can get the
part. The billet over flow can turned ot to be more work than I thought
to polish it out myself but I am working on it. 20$ saved over buying a
polished one is still 20$. Besides the pain in the a$$ I am I would
probably have to re-polish the polished one to my satisfaction. The
front bumper still needs to come off to mount the last screw in the fan
and tranny cooler mounting brackets. The aluminum tranny pan goes on
next week and then the infamous grill goes back in too. Happy fathers
day to all of you fathers. Later I will be sitting in front of the boob
tube watching the NASCAR and race hand polishing my over flow tank.

Does anyone have any suggestions/good-bad experiances with an auto
transmission rebuilder. Someone national like TCI, etc?

If I decide to go with the 727 under my bench, it'll need to be gone
through, and I won't mess with it myself.

There's lots of shops both locally and on the internet, many making big
claims, just want to know more...

Does anyone know anything much about the speedo on a 65 American convertible. It seems to be made by King Seeley. I can't figure out how it is supposed to work and what causes it to work and or not work. Is it magnetic or?
Thanks, Gary Kirk

Gary,

It's magnetic and I think it was manufactured by
King-Seeley.

Here's a website which somewhat explains the workings:

I am trying to clean up a 77 Gremlin X and put it back
on the road.

The radiator expansion bottle is filthy inside because
there was oil in the cooling system in the past. The
windshield washer bottle is not much cleaner either.

I am looking for tips to cleaning these bottles and
trying to make them white again.

I have tried Simple Green and Puple Power. Does
anyone have any other suggestions? Automatic
dishwasher? anything else?

Mike Wilson sent me this, it is interesting but no names provided on
'insiders'
 http://hemi.l3it3r.com/?permalink=1104
about AMC possibly being revived.

I also wrote back Mike this:
"Won't happen. You will however see bits and pieces. From the current
Chrysler 300 grill identical to the 72 Ambassador grill, to the possible
intro of the new Hornet series. But bringing back American Motors won't
happen. You can also go to the government tradmark site and research it, DCX
let the trademark slip years ago and someone in California bought the rights
to the name, not that they will do anything with it except sit on it, sort
of like internet squatters I guess. I would like to see some names revived
like Ambassador and Javelin but again, don't think it will happen, now or
2010. DCX does need some low end cheepie if you will, brand to compete with
a variet fo under $14K cars on the market. And they can do it. However
reviving a automaker that constantly had surnames like 'struggling' or 'in
financial trouble' plastered in front of it in the 70s thru it's demise
won't happen as people will still have a negative memory of it. Not us, we
are AMCers! But the buying public will remember and I guarantee you and will
be more than willing to bet you some beers: that the first thing out of the
press, whether automotive or otherwise, mouths would be "the failed
automaker that used to make Gremlin and Pacer". Not the image DCX wants, nor
needs in 2006, nor 2010. They did make a Hornet, and Matador and Edsel had a
Pacer all in the late 50s/early 60s, so who knows, maybe they start with
Hornet, then Rebel or Matador, but my money will beon the Hornet name being
revived, but NOT anything AMC name due to the stigma unfortuately still
associated with it."

I guess not what everyone would want to hear, however, realistic I guess.

If the plastic is stained maybe not much you can do, but what helps me
is a fistful of gravel rocks or junk hardware, with purple cleaner, then
shake. It'll scrape crud loose in places you can't reach.

I remember someone listing out three or four known issues when rebuilding an
AMC V8, but I couldn't find the old email. In particular I remember the
discussion being that rebuilding an AMC motor wasn't any worse than another
make as long as you knew the quirks. Can anybody list them out for me?

Thanks,

Todd

Non AMC related but Long Island Classic Cars up near Doc, some of ya'll might want to read this newsletter. AMC related however is if I recall, the editor or owner is brother of longtime AMC vendord Gerard Borgo on my vendors list, Gerard, hell, I remember him vending back in the early 80s! Good fellow.

It's magnetic on the inside. What kind of problems are you having?
Could be the cable. You can sometimes pull the head apart and clean it
good with someting like WD-40. The old grease gets stiff with age.
Don't try to put more grease on, unless it's something like that light
spray lithium in an aerosol can. But clean it with WD-40 or mineral
spirits first.

I don't know... it could be, but I'd think they would more likely bring
back Plymouth, since it was just canned because there was no real brand
difference between Plynmouth/Dodge/Chrysler. AMC was know for value
oriented economy cars in its hey-day (late 50s/early 60s, and even into
the 70s). By 2010 it might be a good name, if the car is American made.
But it won't be anything like a "real" AMC. With the palnned market, it
would be more like the Alliance.

Where can you buy the 4.0L cam button? I've never seen them listed anywhere,
