One question: Do the cars have to be beautiful? I have two Gremlins (as if
folks don't know by now!) and neither would be considered in beautiful
shape. One has a crappy old paint job with a bunch of dings, but she drives
well. And the other has a faded paint job but the interior is a mess.
Would one of these two orphans be accepted?

If any of you are from Nevada, Arizona or California, I have exciting news
for you. You are invited to an all-AMC show on October 28-29,
2006 in Boulder City, NV. The show is being hosted and co-sponsored by the
Southern Nevada AMC Club. It will be held at the Hacienda Hotel and Casino
in Boulder City (25 minutes from Las Vegas and 4 miles from Hoover Dam).
The hotel is really nice and they are giving us a gret deal. Show
participants are getting 25% off room rates for any room but you have to
book no later than September 1st for the special rate. They're also letting
us use other faciliites for free.
We are hoping for a good turnout of beautiful AMC's. On Sunday, the 29th we
are taking a tour of a 150 car privately owned auto collection.

For complete details or to receive a registration form, please contact Mark
Ogulnick by posting a message here, by phone 702-293-2038 (home)
702-985-7647 (cell) or e-mail (chicago0516@xxxxxxxxx).

By the way, my first new car was a Fresh Plum '73 Gremlin X. I currently
own a '71 Hornet SST cloned into an SC 360.

Non AMC related unless you are like me and over 40, someone shoot me if I ever put some of those items on my cars! I do like the blinking turn signal on for no reason however, rather common in Houston, even if driving next to wall or ditch. You will need a media player to view this, chancesa re most of you have that in computer already however.

It's interesting that the modern media makes more out of a $4.1 million bid for a Brangelina baby photo than a $4.1 million bid for a Barracuda. Both are all about funny money, but then, if you read your motor magazines, you know all about $1 and $2 million muscle (and muscle-bound pony) car values. If you didn't read the Rand/Workman link posted, you don't know what you don't know about.

When the "popular" press knows all about where old-car prices are going,

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/04/automobiles/04MILLION.html

old and young old-car know-it-alls see flags flying: checkered and red.

Did old AMC make many "marginal" auto models?

Maybe that's what much of production AMC was.

Did AMC also make any "money-maker" machines?

Maybe that's what can "save" the rest of AMC.

http://tinyurl.com/pdpzd

Ten cents a dance or ten cents on a dollar?

AMC always moved to its own special rhythm.

AMC always liked one-in-a-hundred models.

Maybe that's what always made AMC, AMC.

"Different by Design" was Studebaker.

"Different by Choice" was all AMC.

That's the one-percent solution.

That's in your old-car garage.

http://corvettes-musclecars.com/cgi-bin/emAlbum.cgi

For $5,000,000 or $2,500,000 or $1,500,000?

For only for $150,000 an AMC can be yours.

If that's your old AMC car, that's great.

If not, $150 may buy you that Barracuda.

Newly-minted ragtop model of a B&W baby

http://www.franklinmint.com/product1.aspx?SID=2&Product_ID=669

will be added to the plum crazy garage.

And Franklin said, "Show me the money!"

Old Ben knew all about old cars and also knew all about AMC values:

"Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor liberty to purchase power."

Drove the wheels off his Rambler American, then bought a 232 Spirit.

Roll on.

Shifting gears manually (like Franklin did before perfecting his 2-stage 8-speed ECVT...), did anyone notice that one little letter was added yesterday's posting? I put "year" where "era" belonged to see if anyone would read, think, and post a question. How could that Cyclone and Super Nova II have been designed the "same year" when they looked so very different? Did the silver paint [!] blind everyone?

They weren't. They were designed during the same -era-.

One was drawn in the summer of '58, the other circa '62.

If one digit makes a difference in car values, one letter does count.

GM re-bodied one car, twice. The other was re-bodied by AMC. Twice.

http://www.gmphotostore.com/images/53217640_pr.jpg

If AMC people ever manage to build a new version of Kenosha Cadillac

http://www.car-nection.com/yann/Dbas_txt/Drm_cycl.htm

(by building their own comprehensive cooperative database), they'll know all about where their favorite million-dollar AMC car designs came from.

Until that happens, Franklin knew all about something else AMC needs:

http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/images/bf0036s.jpg

"Silence is not always a sign of wisdom, but babbling is ever a folly."

Ben knows.

Has anyone confirmed if this car is a real SS AMX or
not #4647185932? Between myself and a friend of mine,
we have asked a few times for more pictures and the
VIN to check but the guy will not respond. Plus, all
the bidders ids are hidden so it makes me a bit
suspicious especially since it is up to $110,000
without any documentation along with very little
details and just a few not so detailed photos of the
car. There is one blurb about it having some sort of
racing history but again, no details.

Jason, go to AMC Engine Codes
and AMC Automobile Serial Numbers .
Those two files should provide all the info you need.

Ross, NEVER be afraid to show one of your "survivors" or "works in
progress", whichever they might be! Yes, some people, especially those
who have "check book" restorations, will turn their noses up, but the
rank-and-file enthusiasts will usually appreciate seeing such a car. I
know that those draw my attention as much as the near perfect restos. It
gives a chance to see what's being done, and insights on how, if it's a
work in progress, and a better idea of how things were if it's a
survivor. Someone (I hate it when I can't recall names, especially when
it's someone I know!!) brought a "survivor" 57 Rebel to one of the
Delaware Valley AMO meets early this year. I was more interested in it
than the restored SC/Rambler there. And I'd have rather had the Rebel,
but then I do tend to gravitate toward the unusual, that's part of why
I'm an AMC fan to begin with!

From: Mr. AMC
Frank I have the five bladed factory fan in the orange car with the
factory shroud. In the cooler running yellow car I have a 7 blade
Flexi-lite fan and no shroud. Same engines, carbs adjusted properly, and
timing set the same. Maybe you are right and the A/C condenser is
blocked with dirt and cutting down the amount of air flow. I will have
to blow it out. I should be easy as the grill is still not back in yet.
The car also has a new water pump, 180 degree thermostat, the cooling
system was chemically flushed after I got got the car and replaced the
bad heater core and installed a boiled out 78 Concord A/C radiator and a
coolant recovery tank. The previous owner had removed the thermostat as
he said it would run hot when the A/C was on. But he was a so called
mechanic and as I worked on the car I saw all the jury rigging he did.
What a butcher. I will see about adding a small auxiliary electrical fan
and an auxiliary tranny oil cooled by passing the one in the bottom of
the radiator and adding a 2 quart larger tranny oil pan to help cool
things off a little more."

Will the seven blade Flexi-Lite fan fit the factory shroud? That might
be your best bet for cooling. I'll bet the factory clutch is going bad
and that's causing the higher temps. It's common for those clutch fans
to start slipping with age, and you are talking about a 30+ year old
car. I'd bet it's been slipping for the last 10+ years. A new clutch
would do the trick if you want to keep it stock, but I'd go with the
Flexi-Lite plastic fan if it fits the factory shroud.

The auxiliary tranny cooler will help. I run a largish one alone (no
radiator tank cooler) with my AW-4 with no problems. Just remember that
they are sized to work with the in radiator cooler, they are usually
mounted in the return line after the radiator. If you're just using the
cooler get the next size up from the recommended size for your car. Or
just buy one for a V-8 truck w/tow package. The extra couple quarts will
help also, but I wouldn't go that far. The cooler will add about a quart
of fluid and should be plenty extra cooling capacity, especially if the
fan clutch is slipping as I suspect. That's if the car has a fan
clutch...
