Many of you are aware of the different types of scams on internet, this is
one of several you see that 'originates' from ebay. There are a mess of them
out there like the "$20 Chase Survey" or "Laredo National Bank" or
"put-any-credit-union name here" or "update your account" and so forth. All
of them are intended for you to click on a link, which is anywhere from
Nigeria, Britian, Romania, who knows, but it is a attepmt to steal your
info, whether bank account, passwords, log in, user ID all of it.
Thwe one below here won't have the official ebay headers and banners. But
they sometimes show up, sometimes not, on the email the scammers send you.
Some are threatening like "you cashed my chevk where is my item???" or "I'm
going to turn you into ebay!" or as in the one below, tells you they have
not gotten your paypal payment, like I would want a Chevy.
On this one I simply looked at the item number which don't exist. So I
didn't bother to even look up the 'seller' and simply forwarded whole mess
to spoof@xxxxxxxx and spoof@xxxxxxxxxx since paypal was mentioned, they will
then track it and shut it down on the servers end.
But you gotta watch some of this stuff, as the scammers are really good and
sneaky!

Thanks, Eddie, for alerting us to these nuisances. I'd like to throw in my
2 cents which has helped me out tremendously. I found a nice little utility
that I installed in my browser which tells me exactly which site I'm on. As
noted below, you may think you are clicking on an eBay link, but in reality
you're redirected to some bogus site that looks exactly like eBay. The
utility I have actually can tell which site you are on, and if you don't see
eBay in the information box, then DON'T continue! I recommend it highly.

AMC Content: Several months ago, I brought Greta into my mechanic's to
replace the cracked head. Upon replacing that, he found that the exhaust
manifold was so warped that he couldn't even shave it to fit. So I got
another one--both the head and manifold came from that great guy in
Salinas--Joe Fulton--and upon replacing it, discovered that the radiator
really wasn't well. So I had the rad recored. I have yet to get the car
back but she's getting close. I love old cars.

I have used this type of repair for a number of cars
and it worked out really well. Not all dents can be
fixed this way. The guy should be able to tell you
just from looking at the dent if he will be able to
get it out or not. 9 times out of ten, you won't ever
know there was a dent there after they are finished.

I have heard about this so called painless dent
removal and wonder if
anyone has had any experience with this kind of
repair? I have a small
dent in the hatch on my orange car near the trunk lock
that the paint
is
not marred or broken just dented. It is near the trunk
lock and is
accessible if the locking mechanism in the hatch is
removed. I'd like
to
see if one of these guys can fix it so I can preserve
the original
paint
since it is so nice on the car.

A: SOme people with Jeeps have used the 304 and 360 flexplates
interchangeably (I always found vibration) The 304 has slightly less offset
weight than the 360. I went through this with my '73 J4000 when I swapped a
304 for the dead 360. WHich trans are you running? The universal with
adapter ring? New flexplates are still available (I still have my old one
from the '73. I was going to cut the weighted portion from it to find out
how much the 360 needed but never got around to it. The teeth were nearly
chewed off in one spot)

OK, please read before you respond as the header is a
little cryptic.
I am putting an 86 360 in my 73 Commando. When I sold
the original 304 out of the Commando, I did not have
time to keep the 3 hole balancer that came on it.
So, will the flywheel that came off the 304 with the
three bolt balancer be balanced OK with the 360 4 bolt
balancer?
If it is just a matter of comparing part numbers, what
is the proper part number for a 360 flywheel that will
work with the 4 hole balancer?

The problem with Brian's trans is most likely the wrong oil has caused
synchro probs, the pilot bearing in the back of the motor has run dry (it
gets extremely tough to shift when hot but works otherwise. People told him
to put synthetic oil in right before this happened) The clutch doesn't slip.
It just doesn't want to release easily.
One other possibility is the clutch arm is bent (it's a 225 V6 snubnose
with 3 speed standard) which is making it hard to disengage the pressure
plate. (I did that a few times on older vehicles in my younger days) Bottom
line is I don't think it's that serious a problem to fix, but I have no
time/place to do it (I just sold my '93 XJ so I could attend my
mother-in-law's funeral)
I would be tempted to pull the std trans and get the Buick TH400 adapter
ring for a BOP (Buick 350 or V6 from a CJ) and put the TH400 I gave Brian in
(should bolt directly to the tcase unless it's a small hole D18) then it may
need driveshafts (someone who did a TH400 to 3 speed swap should know for
sure)

Here's the situation... Brian has this pretty decent '68
Jeepster that has a transmission problem. He's in a family
situation where job losses have set them back... The transmission
has a problem on his Jeepster and someone quoted him $900. That
seems a bit steep to me, but I don't have time to crawl under
it and check it for him. Maybe one of the Seattle-Snohomish-Everett
folks can get in touch with him and help him out.
So, here's the plea.
1) help Brian fix his '68 Jeepster
2) buy Brian's '68 Jeepster for at least $1,700 or more
3) do something to help him get it fixed

I've only met Brian once, and he's corresponded with both Jim Blair
and me. He's a decent guy, hard working and honest.
If someone can help him out with a wrench or a sale, that
would be great... I'd vote for the wrench work...
I'm being tempted by no less than three Jeeps at this point... but
am resisting the urge, it's very hard, I remember when the '68 Jeepsters
came out and they are so very, very cool. (my first car was a '68 Mustang!)
If I didn't have 7 Jeeps of my own right now.... oh wait, 8. :)
Brian, email me your phone number, if I get some time later this evening
I might try to look at it for you... I can't imagine a manual transmission
problem costing $900... You need to contact an honest mechanic, like
Jim Startup over in Everett, Washington. :)

the guy also has a t96 with overdrive unit and a long tail shaft. tail shaft looks like it is set up for a slip yoke not a torque tube tho. would i be able to take off that tail shaft and put my torque tube mount on instead? i would just rather get rid of my torque tube all together. have an open shaft. i think my 62 has the t96 in it now. if i got the t86, wouldnt it be able to stand the 304 better when i get ready to put it in? will the 86 bolt on to my bellehousing? or be able to redrill holes in my bellhousing for mounting to the 86? once again, i have a complete second 62 classic with same drivetrain, so i am not afraid to attempt to modify parts. if i screw up, i have spare. thanks for any advice have a good weekend

Dave, I'd use a regular driveshaft with the trans and the four link. The
rear axle will want to twist in the four link setup with the torque tube
attached, causing a little binding. That or just leave the upper two
links off -- the tube will keep the axle from twisting and that should
eliminate most, if not all, binding. The seal on the torque tube
tailshaft is the same as a Borg Warner trans with an open driveshaft.
You'll have the flange for the torque tube back there, but that won't
hurt a thing.
You are correct -- the OD unit just replaces the long tailshaft housing
on the standard (non-OD) trans. The torque tube is the same length.
There are two different torque tube designs where they connect to the
transmission. You will need the tube that came with the transmission you
have. You can cut the front off and weld to the other outer tube if
necessary, you don't have to have the entire tube and shaft, just the
front portion. The 56-62 models use two large bolts, one on each side,
with some springs to keep tension on them. 63-66 models use four bolts
on a rectangular flange (one each corner) and a thick rubber piece
between the transmission flange and tube. Of course the trans flange and
tube flange must match. The flange bolts off the OD unit, so you can
swap the flanges if you can find one of the correct types instead of
modifying or changing the torque tube.
You can shorten a torque tube, but it would be difficult for six
cylinder or 56-62 V-8 models. They use a solid shaft similar to an axle
shaft. It would have to be cut then resplined, something local shops may
not be able to do. 63-66 V-8 shafts are two piece with a tubular front
part. The front tubular section can be shortened by any driveshaft shop.

i wouldn't be surprised if amc arranged all tranny +/- od setups to be
the same length - the t-96 had a -very- long tailshaft.
but -- doesn't the t-86 have a different nose from the t-96? iirc it
has a aquarer pattern, larger retainer, and longer 1 1/8" dia input
shaft. iirc frank searched for some time for the right bellhousing
for his 4.0 / '63 classic, before giving up and going auto."
Not quite. I wasn't able to find a T-86 OD unit. I did use a 79 multi
pattern bell housing with the 4.0L and a T-96. The T-96 just wasn't
strong enough for the 4.0L (then 4.6L) and I replaced it with an auto
because I couldn't find a T-86. I'm not sure about the bolt pattern and
bearing retainer diameter of the T-86. I wouldn't be surprised if it's
bigger -- would expect it actually. The T-96 is real light duty. The 86
and 96 may share the same bolt pattern though, the T-86 was a HD option
for 196 cars that normally came with a T-96.

Thanks to all who replied. I have heard good things about the painless
dent removal but have never seen it done or the end result. The reason I
want to see about it is to not have to repaint the hatch on my Hornet
where the dent is.The original paint is real nice.
