Unfortunately polyurethane bushings simply squeak and groan. The lube
never lasts, pressure and time and it exits. It's too bad it makes "old
car sounds" on an old car that's actually perfect.

  Well, it finally came out today, will be running a
few days, or a few weeks, not sure, in The Washington
Post paper, in today's paper it's a half-page COLOR
spread, green background with my orange-and-black GT
glaring out at you. Too bad the darn artists blocked
out the Gremlin GT model name, but you can at least
tell it's a GT by the colored bumpers and side flares.
 :D Woo-hoo! A little fame, a tiny amount of cash, but
still, fun to do. I bought 2 papers, will probably buy
a few more, then see about acquiring some more from
the Post distributors for cheap on Wednesday. :)

Yes, there is some reasoning behind the part numbers, at least for the first section. AMC uses "Group" numbers for each major area. You've probably heard of "Group 19" parts -- those are all performance parts. The Group number will be the first part of a part number -- i.e. 22.058.3658514. The Group number is 22, sub group 58, part number 3658514. There may be a dash between the part and Group/Sub-Group number. The Group number will only be on the AMC box or a tag on the part, not on the part itself, so knowing the Group is of limited use. It does help tremendously when looking up the number in an AMC parts book though -- at least you know what section to start looking in. 

The part numbers themselves are pretty much sequential MOST of the time, but not always. Some late 50s part numbers have only four digits, while by the 70s most (if not all) have seven. Occasionally a later part number has a "smaller" number though (fewer digits). Part numbers that are close usually designate similar items. Sorry I can't be any more specific, but I haven't looked at the numbers close enough to discern any pattern. Anyone else have more detailed info?

18 - Four Wheel Drive Components
19 - High Performance
20 - Sheet Metal Repair Panels
21 - (not used)
22 - Dash/Wipers/Glove Box
23 - Doors/Weatherseals/Handles
24 - Rear Quarter Panels/Parts
25 - Glass (including gaskets and channels)
26 - Body Moldings/Stripe Kits

* I got these numbers from Galvin's site (www.ramblerparts.com). These Group numbers weren't listed, but were not marked as "not used". That is an assumption on my part.

Jim, I know that the S-10 rear axle is the correct fit for a 58-63 American, and should be close for a 64-69. I wonder if it would be the right size for an XJ/MJ?? A 4.3L model should be strong enough. I think the four cylinder model is even stronger than a D35 or AMC 15.

I used steel muffler tubing to fix my filler hose. I had rather bad luck with a POR-15 kit from 3-4 years ago. It was a bit stiff and barely covered inside a 19 gallon tank. Maybe I got a bad kit, though it was factory sealed, or they've improved it since then. I've always had good results from Hirsch Auto kits.

Simple -- drive out the studs then knock the hub off the drum. The studs are all that holds it together, though the center of the hub is a tight fit in the center hole of the drum. None are "one piece" as I thought at one time.

I don't recall a problem with the 232 flexplate, just the one for the 196. They get brittle and crack with age. The early 232 may use the same type flexplate. Can't get to Tripod sites from work, may look once I get home.

Well, Peter my condolences- been there-a PITA. I have to agree but changed the subject to the PS pump. I think it is going on 3 years now, I had a leak in my 85 eagles ps pump hose and went to change it only to discover a pinhole leak in the ps pump reservoir, so I get a new one, and go to change it only to do what you did- snapped one of the 3 bolts that attach it to the block. it was getting cold and there it sits to this day. I will attemp it again this summer, not sure how to either drill it out or what. I wonder if it can get by with just 2? And another PS issue,  tried to take off the water pump on the concord, took off all the belts except for the ps belt. I can not get it loose enough. so i think I have unbolted every ps bolt and nut that i can see, and probably bolts and things that have NOTHING to do with the ps pump and still it will not budge at all to loosen it, so it has sit since last year. If any one has some ideas, other than  BFH, please share with me. I th!

nice car eddie- my dad had one just like it- Pompeii yellow but with the black interor, 343 engine, what a treat to drive. he got it and a month later let me take it to the senior prom,  In 7th heaven, thought I was driving a lincoln, all polished up and classy looking, wish I still had it, or had room for yours. Dad then gave it to me the next year to commute to college. Until I talked him into getting me a nice Beale street blue/black vinyl roof 290 sst javelin. Better car for a college kid. what a beauty, had it thru college and grad school, went to work at amc and traded it (sadly)for a Loaded mello yello pacer x with every option. then 2 months later got a promotion- with a demo and gave it to my folks. Dad still has the pacer x, been in the garage the last 20 years so this year I hope to get her registered and get her road worth... oh the fun and memories. thanks for letting me reminisce with the pics of you car. Ah, the goodo'l days. 49 cent gas but waiting for hour i!
