I've seen Edmunds aftermarlet heads, and don't know of any other maker. This head appears to be nearly identical to the cast iron version. Nash made a dual carb head for the 196 for 1955 only! This may actually be a rarer item than the aftermarket head. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Independent Magazine" (AIM) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AIM.html (free download available!) original message ------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2006 12:01:14 -0700 From: Tom Jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] Alum. Head & Twin Carbs for Rambler on eBay Holee ka-rap that is indeed a rare thing. It's for the 196 in-head motor. I have never owned one of those motors though I admire them from afar and would like to hotrod one. I can't afford it at all! but I will watch this one! If anyone on this list is serious about buying it please let me know; I'll refrain from bidding. I'm assuming the OD trans came from behind the 327. That should take the power of a 401 as well. The T-10 four speed is a modified T-89 -- reverse is replaced by fourth gear and a new reverse is mounted in the tailshaft housing for the T-10. You can use a flashomatic, but the 401 crankshaft flange may require machining. You would need the bell housing from a 1967-71 M-10/11/12 auto. That will bolt to the Flash-O-Matic (which is either an M-8 or M-10). -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Independent Magazine" (AIM) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AIM.html (free download available!) original message------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2006 20:09:40 -0500 From: "Eddie Stakes" <eddiestakes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [AMC-List] 401V8 into Marlin questions I want to put a 401 c.i. in one of my marlins. it now has a 327. is there a bellhousing that will mate the 401 to the 3sp/od I have in my shop floor? One came within 200 yards of my house in Caruthersville, Mo. Some 60% of my town of 6,700 was wiped out or significantly damaged. We had a broken window, broken siding from baseball sized hail, some displaced shingles and vehicle dents. My garage housed my '69 AMX and '57 Chevy 4-door hardtop. Both cars made it unscathed, and I only saw a dent or two on the shed. Meanwhile, about a half mile away a '63 Studebaker Avanti was being stored in an old service station. It is owned by the local GM dealer. My nephew is service manager there and said the Avanti was pretty messed up when he pulled it out of the rubble. The fiberglass welds in the top had broken loose, and much other damage occurred. A couple of blocks away, another garage blew away. Inside was a mid-'50s Studebaker pickup which had been stored there since I was in high school in the '70s. The shed is gone, but the truck was ! still in place. However, it has a broken windshield and various dents. But I'd say it's salvagable. Another car buddy in town last fall bought a '39 Ford street rod. It was pristine, like all his past cars. His house was destroyed, and as of Friday Bill still couldn't get his car out of the garage. He is sure that at best it is scratched up, but at least it appears to be in one piece. I told my wife that the inside of my garage looked like a tornado hit it. Of course, it looked that way before last Sunday! Also need the gasket and locking ring. Al Dies <mailto:bldgmgr@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> bldgmgr@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Snip As far as I know, there is no aftermarket replacement for the AMC Spirit and SX4 gasoline tank sending unit. I have been looking for one off and on for the last 3 years. Year One offers a rebuilding service as do some others as a niche market. Year One Web site is: http://www.yearone.com/ Other re-builders may be found through Hemmings ads, National AMC club classified ads or in Eddie Stakes Vendor listings on his web site etc. The last time I checked for availability and prices a C-note was a starting number. MOPAR parts offered gaskets under the following part number; Gas Tank sending unit Gasket. Mopar Part # J0941521. (pack of five) I do not know if they are still available. The lock ring might also be available through MOPAR or an auto parts store. Don't know on that one.
