There's a recent discussion on this over at http://autobodystore.com/forum/index.php (I think it's in the shop tools section). Long story short, there are decent compressors in the price range you are looking at.

I've been looking at the compressors from Ingersoll-Rand. They make some nice units in the $1,000 range. I'm not sure who sells them in your area, but here's a couple of vendors that carry them so you can see what models are available. The one I've been looking at is 17 cfm with an 80 gallon tank for $999.
