Re:Delco Alt. Conversion On A 258

Matt's site is very informative. I used the Dayco belt he said to use on
my Delco conversion on my 74 258 Hornet. I assumed that the Ambo's and
Matadors were wider cars than the Hornets and Americans and that there
would not be a steering box clearance problem with a power steering car.
Here are the problems I encountered. Since the Delco alt fan hits the
bracket I know it is a "C" style bracket.
My cure was to remove the fan from the Motorola alt and have it drilled
out to the Delco shaft size and add a washer for it to clear the alt.
housing on the Delco. You don't have to worry about the key way in the
motorola fan. Next with that solved I installed the alt only to find
that I could not get it close enough to the engine to install the belt
The alt fan now clears but hits the "C" bracket when you try to get the
belt on. You now need to cut the "C" bracket for clearance and weld on a
piece of metal to re-enforce it where you cut it. Now you can install
the belt that Matt recommends which is 1/4 inch shorter than the stock
one. I still have a minor clearance problem between the alt.and the
steering box that I have to get around to fixing buy grinding a little
off the steering box and the alt housing. To be truthful I found this to
be one pain of a job but love that 100 amp Delco over that 35 amp
Motorola crap. You can turn on every electrical accessory and the amp
meter doesn't move off of 16 amps. My other Hornet with the Motorola the
amps drop from 14 to a little below 12 amps. I hope this helps.
