How to open a '79 AMX hatch with spoiler over keyhole????

  While emptying a friend's AMX of a pile of hubcaps,
I was cursing the lack of access to the rear hatch, as
the spoiler is overtop the key access! I looked and
looked up front for a remote lever, but never found
it. Where the heck IS the hatch release on an AMX with
spoiler? I got the car emptied, but it would have been
MUCH easier to do with an openable hatchback. Grr!
What's the secret?
