Tried to fix these myself, but with the axle spindle nuts rusted tight, I broke a brand new 1/2" breaker bar stud clean off , trying to break the 175 ft/lb torque ( probably much more, due to rust, crud ). So, I gave in and took it to a shop. Cost me $378, but at least it's repaired, and I can breath easier, knowing the front axles won't come apart now. Those U's were totally shot, clanking and clunking in reverse and 4x use. I doubt there were any needle bearings left in eitehr side, there was that much play and slop. They're nice and tight and quiet now, though! I should be good for the winter, as that was really the only thing I think wrong with the entire Jeep, unless problems lurk in the transfer case. Only 125k miles on it, hopefully it'll serve me well this winter before needing any additional repairs. Now, back to moving AMC cars off the farm... :) I need that 4x4 system working to tow them out of the back fields!
