Re: Final Authority on 4.0 wiring into a Matador and Eagle

There are a couple of us who have done the 4.0L swap. If you're using the trans that came with the 4.0L (highly advised for the Coupe -- provided you can find a 2WD AW-4 in your area) it's a piece of cake. You don't need the 4.0L wiring diagram, you just need the pin-out for the firewall connector. Instead of cutting the connector I suggest you unplug it. There's a screw in the middle of it, and you will likely have to remove the brake booster to get to it, but it will be worth the trouble -- it may even plug right in, at least on the Eagle. The plug is in two halves -- one for body lighting and the other for the engine. There are a few misc. items on the engine plug, like the windshield wipers, but those are easy to find. Those you can cut. The pin-out does have wiring colors on it, but the wire are much easier to identify still on the connector.

Just start at the computer in the 4.0L donor vehicle and lift the wiring harness and everything attached to it. Then place in the receiving car's engine bay in the same manner. Use everything possible from the 4.0L harness, alternator connections and all. Even use the power feeds from the battery to the dash from the 4.0L harness. Pull the original vehicle engine wiring harness completely out, it won't be needed. The 4.0L harness is well integrated, and most of the colors will be the same. Do it like this, and you'll have 5-6 wires to splice and that's it. Three are power wires from battery to dash, one is ignition, and another the temp sending unit. To get the engine to run you only have to have the ignition switch wire (green) connected -- the computer get's power directly from the starter relay.
