I'm a new member so bear with me for getting into the flow. Not being the
level with most of you technically speaking, and after reading some of the posts
pertaining to handling modifications for performance I thought as an alternative
I'd over the following.
In 1972 I ordered from the factory a Gremlin X, 5.0L, 3 Speed Manual, Quick
Ratio Steering, Heavy Duty Suspension, no power options, with the specific
intention of Auto Crossing in Maryland under the rules at the time for F Stock
Class. Under the rules I was allowed to clamp down the front coil springs one
link, replace shocks with Gabriel Gas Shocks, add a Rear Sway Bar, and
Traction Bars to stop wheel hop during hard braking. I ran Belted bias ply 60
Series Tires at 45LBS front and rear on the factory Rally Rims. I balanced the
car by removing the front bumper and running a full tank of Gas! The only
engine mods were to advance the timing and enlarge the clutch pressure plate.
I also broke the factory 3 speed and replaced it with a Hurst shift kit.
End result, neutral steering, excellent flat cornering with controlled four
wheel slides under drifting and acceleration, good braking and
acceleration.
The car took 8 first place trophies and F Stock in points
running in a Class with BMW 2002's, Datson Fairlady's, Solid rear axial
early Vette's, and Corvairs. It also had performance times that
bettered most D Stock class cars including Datson 240Z's.
I now have a very nice '68 AMX 343ci, Automatic, in original condition and
it's a great cruiser. I think the Gremlin would have eaten the AMX, that I now
have, alive in an Autocross but that was then, and this is now.
