I really don't know. It's frustrating, really. In fact, I just watched a History Channel show (I take that channel's polemics with a huge grain of salt, anyway) about muscle cars, and nowhere was AMC participation mentioned whatsoever, as the show pored over GM, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles ones by one.
They got a few details about them wrong, too. They talked about the Plymouth Superbird without even mentioning the nearly identical Charger Daytona which was sold the year previous, and they called some Daytonas Superbirds in pictures, when Daytona graphics were prominently displayed across their tails. They said that the Challenger was out for 4 seasons, when it was sold for 5 (1970-74), they said that the '77 Trans Am's engine was a 6 and 1/2 liter engine instead of a
6.6, and the '57 Rambler Rebel wasn't mentioned when they were talking about a powerful engine meeting a midsize car for the first time (which they said happened in '64 with the GTO). And the Rebel was second only to the FI Corvette.
No Rebels, no Machines, no SC/Ramblers, no SC/360s, no Javelins, no AMXs...nothing.
They did mention that the muscle car era as the energy crisis forced people to step down to Gremlins, Vegas, and Pintos. And in one quick shot, they showed the back of a green Gremlin. But that was it.
And technically, I suppose, the Eagle was never available with AWD. The Eagle came with 4WD. Of course, so did the Subarus back then.
Oh well.

to make the point was that in 1981 if you wanted an all-wheel-drive
car, your only choices were Audi or Subaru! (Of course we know
better! A friend of mine who owns an Eagle wagon sent Motorweek
an email correcting their omission. What is it with so many car
guys that AMC just gets no respect?)
