The thing is unless it's an unlimited record there's NO info available on the Internet except for the current records. I tried searching too -- there's no mention of "American Spirit" anywhere, but many mentions of "Spirit of America" and the "Speed Spectacular" runs. The press release and Shell ad (or Champion -- I'd have to dig for the ad now!) are the only info I've been able to find. I suppose a book on LSR records published sometime in 1969 might have it, if the records stood for long. I imagine the class records were broken a lot by people trying for the unlimited record. According to FIA rules you can make a class and unlimited run at the same time. Basically they record your speed and car type (just engine size back then) and see what record you set, if any.

That's the difficulty of the Internet -- lots of info, but only for things someone is interested in. When you search for "AMC Speed Records" you'll find that a lot of the info is the same on many of the sites too. Something rather obscure like the "American Spirit" just doesn't show up. I may e-mail FIA and see if there is a way to get a list of records from a certain time period or run.

Frank, my bad, I'll take your word regarding the American Spirit record, I just haven't been unable to find anything regarding a record run. The article about the Javelin Speed Spectacular said that the stream liner never ran, but it must of ran some time after that article was originally printed.
