Re: mail Digest for 2 Dec 2005 in hour 8:00

Kim, I'm familiar with Tony Zamisch, and interviewed him after one of the Silver State runs by phone. Pat is correct -- Tony DOES NOT hold any Land Speed Record even though he states so on his website. He's using the term INFORMALLY. He does have the fastest street driven AMC, and has witnessed proof of his speeds. That's not being denied. In order for it to be an official LSR, however, the speed has to be recorded over a controlled track by official time keepers and equipment by one of several organizations. Tony misused the term "Land Speed Record" is all. I don't think Pat denies Tony's accomplishment. The two of you just got lost in semantics.

I take exception to Pat's statement that there is no record of an AMC going over 200 mph. I have the documents here in front of me proving otherwise. The class structure has changed a lot since 1968, which further muddies the waters. There are now Categories by letter, then groups and classes. I can find no listings of records on the Internet except the current or recent (from 5-10 years back) attempts. The "American Spirit" attempts, since the overall record wasn't broken, will remain rather obscure, it seems. I'd have to find a late 1968 or early 1969 listing to see if any of the other records were broken. Since the only confirmation I have is an advertisement that the Class B record was broken, it's possible that other classes were too. The advertiser just didn't mention anyting else, and AMC was really counting on the LSR being broken for the publicity. You'd think they would have capitalized on any record breaking, but they had a lot going on in 68! They may not have wa!
nted to take away from the AMX attempts in Texas. A stock looking car would certainly be better publicity than a special built one.

The three engines used were a 182.2 (sleeved 199) I-6, a 294.5 (bored 290) V-8, and a 373.5 (sleeved 390) V-8. So technically there was no "390" used. The V-8s used a GMC 6-71 blower, the six an Airesearch turbo. The V-8s were mechanically injected with nitro-methane & methanol; the six mechanical injection and nitro-methane.
