RE: Back Sliding/Land Speed Records

Hey Pat (and all),

That was an interesting and well-researched post.
Since I was at Bonneville for the first time last
summer, I'll just note that the rules have changed
since the Breedlove days. The long course is now
seven miles, not the ten miles which was used
previously. You are timed for three of those miles in
the center of the course. You have two miles to get
up to speed and two miles to slow down if you need
them. Cars only run in one direction now, with a
starting line at be beginning of each course. The car
is impounded immediately after the first run and then
must make it's second attempt at the beginning of the
next day. All record-attempting cars making their
second runs are expected to run at the beginning of
the next day.

There is a separate short course (five miles) for
slower cars (I think less than 200 mph, but don't
quote me) and the long course mentioned above.

I will say it's a hoot to watch. I never thought it
would be so much fun.
