As far as I know, so far, > no AMC engine has achieved a speed over 200 mph. Tony Zamisch, and his wife Rhonda (driver in the picture above), currently hold the Land Speed Record in an AMC car. Their 1970 AMC Javelin was clocked on radar at 192mph during the 1997 Silver State Classic Challenge. The car hit 216mph during 1998 winter tests. This Javelin's top speed has yet to be determined. Regards, Kim Bueler '75 Gremlin X 360 V8 Kim, let me clarify what I meant to say. No AMC engine has ever achieved an "Official Recognized Land Speed Record" over 200 mph. Craig Breedlove drove a 68 AMX on the Bonneville Salt Flats during bad weather, and to quote Craig, "I was taching over 200 mph with the AMX, but that salt was so slippery, the wheels wouldn't grab. It felt like I was driving on jello." Craig was not able to back up that 200+ one way run with a return run in the opposite direction, so his 200+ one way run is NOT recognized as a Land Speed Record. He was able to run 176 mph in one direction and 187 mph on the return run in the opposite direction, for a 2-way average of 182. This run was through the timed mile, with the times certified by the USAC. I am well aware of everything Tony Z has done for the AMC hobby, but without a return run, in the opposite direction, there is no "Official Land Speed Record." Also, a Land Speed Record is set on a flat course, thru a set measured distance, with the speed calculated based on the precise time it takes to cover the measured distance, usually a mile. These times are certified by groups like the USAC, FIC, SCTA, etc. The reason for the return run in the opposite direction, is to eliminate any advantages achieved from a down hill run or a run benefiting from a tail wind. I have not seen any USAC, FIC, SCTA, etc., records, that list any "Official Land Speed Records" of any AMC over 200 mph. No return run, in the opposite direction, without a 2-way average = no official record.
