Modern mailing list software, like Mailman, solves this problem; you go to a webpage to sign up for a list, but instead of just signing you or your ("victim") up, it sends email to that address with a URL that you click -- ONLY THEN are you joined to the list. It totally prevents this problem.

Because some email programs allow a person to enter in a different address or someone ELSE's Email address, and doesn't care about the true source ( ie, originator) address. So someone with this type of email can enter in ANY email address to sign up for anything, including YOURS, and there's nothing you can
