engine load, but the booster pump on the fuel pump should keep them from
stopping as long as it works. The booster/fuel pump is hard to find and
getting expensive. An alternative is to use a vacuum storage can or ball.

The pumps for the sixes are not hard to find and aren't any more expensive
than they were 8 years ago but don't expect to be able to get one from the
big chains (at least not without a special order). A lot of the AMC parts
vendors sell them and Kanter sells them. They tend to run about $80-$90
(some places sell them outright, they cost more but you don't have to deal
with sending a core back) but like I said, this is no different than 8
years ago.
Antique Auto Cellar (http://www.then-now.com) can rebuild your pump. They
did the one for my wagon a couple of months ago and the total cost was
$93.50 (plus shipping to them which was less than $10) and it was back to
me within 10 days after I sent it in. The pump came back looking and
working like new. They also sell rebuild kits for about $40 if you want to
do the work yourself.
$90 may be a lot compared to $30 or so for cars with electric wipers but
they are far less expensive than a fuel pump for a fuel injected vehicle.
