The light is hot all the time at the socket, the door switch provides the ground. If grounding the wire does not make the light come on then the wire has a break in it at some point. Run a continuity check on the wire with an ohm meter. I would first check where the ground wire attaches to the dome light to see if the connection there is bad. After that it is just a matter of checking increasing lengthes of the wire with an ohm meter to see where the continuity stops.
