heater core removal

I seem to remember my old 59 Rebel had an access door
on the heater box. Four screws and the heater core
came out via the engine bay. I know I had one car that
did it that way.
I'm geetin to think why couldn't you sacrifice a box,
cut a door slightly larger than the core, and make an
access door. Gonna go check it out.....Russ
