i'm beginning to like joe's idea of an old-timey lakester.

the amc t-10 isn't really strong enough for 500hp either, but i
suppose in a very light car...  and you could modify it to s3 specs
and stuff it with tex racing innards i suppose.  i -think- they have
parts that'd work with your input and mainshaft.

i have the 'mexican' bellhousing for this, but i don't know if i want
to part with it.

or you could run an amc-pattern dne 5sp or 6sp, if you can find the
input shaft.  i hear they don't make them any more.
