You may find a source of paint surface gloss numbers for AMC cars. That is
something that we all need in our resources anyway. Gloss is the term you
need to use in this case. Gloss is measured with the use of special
measuring instruments which use light to detect gloss at levels
corrosponding to a number scale of zero to one hundred. This is an accepted
standard used in automotive and motorcycle industries. The measurements are
taken using one of only two angles for refraction, 60 and 85 degrees which
has to be taken into account when trying to match paint gloss. Some larger
paint shops use these instruments and some of our more accomplished AMC
restorers may have access to one of the devices.
A perfect flat on the gloss scale would be zero. A perfect if possible
gloss on the gloss scale would be 100. ( That would be a perfect mirror with
no pigment ) The proper terminology for casual verbal reference is in five
ranges as follows ; Flat 0-15, Eggshell 5-20, Satin 15-35,
Semi-Gloss 30-65, and Gloss 65-100.
Someone should be able to help find the data you need to have the proper
gloss measurement for originality. Fred Koos has lots of old AMC technical
data. You may check with someone who has done a perfect restoration such
as the guy with the BBB AMX and BBB Javelin. I forgot his name but it is
easy to find.
I DO hope that this helps. I ran a coating line for GM for about 24
years and absorbed some trivia.
