Once the brake backing plate is unbolted, you can either use a real slide hammer to "snatch" the hub/axle/backing plate assembly loose from the housing, or you can invert one of the brake drums on the lug studs, loosely screw on the lug nuts, then use the brake drum as a slide hammer to pull the whole works. Neither the AMC 15 nor the AMC 20 rear end use any internal retainers to keep the axles in place--it's all held in by the bearing retainers.
